Job description

Job Description: SummaryAfter checking into the front office and completing financial paperwork and any required payments, an Ophthalmic Technician Initiates patient contact in the office. They complete check in with a health assessment. They complete the initial exam and begin diagnostic testing. They confirm the purpose of the visit, update past medical history, perform vision testing and chart results in our Electronic Health Record system (EHR/EMR) system, they collecting basic vitals, and assist with in-office procedures and may perform limited OCT and/or fundus photo testing as well as Humphrey Visual Field (HVF) testing.Performing appointment screening calls and providing triage for appointment scheduling has become part of standard procedure to minimize face to face time and accommodate social distancing.

Required Skills or Abilities
Strong interpersonal ability especially with geriatric population. Good organizational skills, especially with use of computers and data entry (EMR). Good clinical skills, especially when using examination and diagnostic testing equipment. Willingness to analyze and fix problems: OTP (Own the Problem).
Performance Measures
Test and measure eye function to assist Ophthalmologist to diagnose and treat eye disorders and disease. Obtain accurate and complete History of Present Illness, Chief Complaint, and Past Medical History. Complete initial exam and begin diagnostic testing: observing pupils, visual
acuity, extra ocular muscle movement, confrontation visual fields,
color vision test, intraocular pressure (IOP), basic vitals and chart results in EMR. Instill drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes. Perform imaging: fundus photos, OCT (macular or ocular nerve), Humphrey visual fields. Assist with in-office procedures. Give instructions to patients concerning eye care.

Accurately perform:
Vision Acuity
Pupil evaluation (RAPD check)
Extra ocular muscle movement (EOM)
Color vision testing
Operating Humphrey Visual Field/export of VF data
IOP by tonopen or applanation
OCT /export of data
Fundus photos /export of data
Fluorescein Angiography
Assist in the following procedures:
Intravitreal Injections Laser Procedures Cryo Procedure Facial/Lid Biopsies Medication preparation for procedures

Required Knowledge, Experience, or Licensure/Registration
Required: High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred: COA Medical assisting certification
Medical office experience
Ophthalmic/Optometric assistance experience
Ophthalmic assisting certification CNA/LPN
Working ConditionsStaggered arrivals and departures are planned in advance. Break and lunch times are provided.
OSHA Category 1: Involves exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
