A Birth Doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to a birthing person before, during, and shortly after childbirth. They do not provide medical care but help create a calm and supportive environment. Doulas assist with comfort measures, advocacy, and guidance to ensure a positive birth experience. Their goal is to empower parents by offering continuous reassurance and personalized support throughout labor and delivery.
To thrive as a Birth Doula, you need a solid understanding of childbirth support techniques, knowledge of the birth process, and typically completion of a professional doula training program. Certification from organizations like DONA International or CAPPA is highly regarded, and familiarity with record-keeping tools or client management systems can be beneficial. Outstanding soft skills include empathy, active listening, calmness under pressure, and strong interpersonal communication. These skills are important for providing comfort and advocacy to birthing individuals and ensuring positive, empowering experiences during labor and delivery.
Birth Doulas usually work on an on-call basis, especially as their client’s due date approaches, meaning schedules can be unpredictable and may include nights, weekends, and holidays. You can expect to provide prenatal visits, continuous support during labor and birth, and sometimes postpartum visits, which requires flexibility and a readiness to respond quickly to client needs. Some Doulas work independently, while others are part of doula collectives or partner with hospitals and birth centers. This role is well-suited to those comfortable with irregular hours and who are committed to providing reliable care during a significant life event.
