POSITION SPECIFICS
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) at Penn State invites applications for a Lecturer, Assistant Teaching Professor, or Associate Teaching Professor appointment with expertise in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and/or related fields. We are seeking a dynamic, collaborative, and self-motivated educator who is passionate about teaching and committed to mentoring the next generation of biotechnology scientists and entrepreneurs. The department is particularly interested in candidates with experience in the biotechnology industry who will work to strengthen and grow our Biotechnology B.S. program.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to work effectively across disciplines, fostering partnerships with industry, academia, and the community to enhance our undergraduate biotechnology offerings. A proactive collaborator who takes the lead in developing innovative curricula, cultivating industry connections, and creating opportunities for student engagement will thrive in this role. Expectations include teaching biotechnology and related courses, and overseeing biotechnology internships; other duties may include mentoring graduate teaching assistants, teaching introductory or advanced undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses, undergraduate student advising, and service to the department or college.
Work expectations for the position include fall, spring, and summer duties, with time for curriculum development and improvement over the summer. Professional development opportunities are also supported and encouraged. This appointment will be filled at the rank of Lecturer, Assistant Teaching Professor, or Associate Teaching Professor. Rank and length of term will be commensurate with the candidate's education, experience, and leadership qualities.
Competitive applicants will have:
- Master's degree (Lecturer) or Ph.D. (Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor) in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a related field
- Experience teaching at least one course as either the lead or assisting instructor
- Demonstrated ability to achieve teaching excellence at both introductory and advanced undergraduate levels
- Proven commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community in the practice and teaching of science
- Professional experience in the biotechnology or biopharmaceutical industry (preferred)
- Experience or interest in curriculum development and innovative, evidence-based pedagogy, such as active learning or course-based undergraduate research experiences (preferred)

- A teaching dossier (all compiled into one document) including a statement of teaching philosophy and interests, evidence that demonstrates a commitment to excellence in teaching and improving pedagogical practices, and how you plan to contribute to or advance the Penn State Values.
As part of the teaching dossier, applicants are asked to submit materials that demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence. These materials could include any of the following: a recorded lesson with a personal reflection on the lesson, results and reflection from a teaching practices inventory, syllabi authored by you for a class that you have taught or a class that you would like to teach, student or peer evaluations from previous teaching experiences, example teaching materials that you have developed, peer-reviewed articles authored on teaching-related topics, other materials that demonstrate your understanding of and commitment to research-based teaching practices, awards and recognition for teaching and teaching-related scholarly activities (a brief explanation for why you were recognized should be provided).
Review of applications will begin as received and continue until the position is filled. Expected start date would be January 1, 2027 or July 1, 2027 but off cycle start dates would be considered. We seek a dedicated professional who is passionate about education, collaborative in approach, and driven to make a meaningful impact on our students and community.
