What is biotech?

Biotech, the preferred shorthand for biotechnology, is a field of technology focused on the use of biology. The main focus of this field is the use of cellular and biomolecular processes to develop new products. While the modern use of the term focuses on medical research done in labs, biotechnology is considerably more expansive than most people realize. The three primary fields of focus are food, fuel, and medicine. For example, bread and cheese come from ancient biotechnology techniques. Whether your job as a biotechnologist focuses on developing a drug for a company or trying to generate electricity from plants, biotechnology has the potential to create significant advances in technology, and that's why so many universities and companies study it.

What are biotech jobs?

Biotech jobs are roles within the biotechnology industry, which combines biology, technology, and engineering to develop products and solutions for healthcare, agriculture, environmental management, and more. These positions can include research scientists, laboratory technicians, bioprocess engineers, quality assurance specialists, regulatory affairs managers, and clinical research associates. Professionals in biotech work on developing new drugs, therapies, medical devices, genetically modified organisms, and biofuels. The field is interdisciplinary and offers opportunities in both research and business settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a biotech role?

To thrive in a Biotech role, you need a solid background in biology, chemistry, or related sciences, often supported by a relevant degree and laboratory experience. Additionally, project timelines can be unpredictable due to the complexity of biological systems and the need for rigorous testing and validation. Collaboration across multidisciplinary teams—including scientists, engineers, and regulatory specialists—is essential, which can require strong communication and project management skills. Navigating these challenges can be highly rewarding, as they often lead to innovative solutions and significant scientific breakthroughs.

  • At least 7 years of relevant experience in biopharma pricing, market access, strategic contracting, commercial strategy, HEOR, consulting, or a related area.
  • US pricing strategy experience, including launch, indication expansion, portfolio, or in-line pricing work.
  • Strong understanding of the US payer, provider, reimbursement, and drug pricing landscape.
  • Experience communicating complex analysis and recommendations to senior leaders.
  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking, influencing, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, scenario analysis, and financial modeling.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% overnight.

We would prefer you to have:

  • Advanced degree, such as a master's, MBA, PhD, JD, or PharmD.
  • 10+ years of relevant biopharma experience, including product launch experience.
  • Experience pricing rare disease or specialty therapies with complex reimbursement dynamics.
  • Advanced pricing or revenue analytics experience, including GTN forecasting, price-volume analysis, government pricing assessments, or value-based agreement modeling.
  • Practical experience using AI-enabled tools to improve pricing research, scenario planning, workflow efficiency, insight generation, or decision support.
  • Executive presence and the ability to build alignment, challenge assumptions constructively, and influence senior and global stakeholders.
