Biotech Case Manager information

What is a Biotech Case Manager?

A Biotech Case Manager is a professional who coordinates care and services for patients or clients involved in biotechnology-related treatments, such as gene therapies, biologic drugs, or advanced diagnostics. They serve as a liaison between patients, healthcare providers, insurance companies, and biotech companies to ensure smooth access to complex therapies. Their responsibilities often include patient education, monitoring treatment progress, managing insurance authorizations, and supporting adherence to prescribed therapies. Biotech Case Managers play a critical role in helping patients navigate the unique challenges of advanced biotech treatments, ensuring quality care and positive health outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biotech Case Manager?

To thrive as a Biotech Case Manager, you need a solid background in life sciences or healthcare, strong organizational skills, and experience in patient or client management, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CRM software, electronic health records, and industry-specific platforms is typical, and certifications in case management or healthcare compliance are valuable. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and empathy are the soft skills that help you build relationships and navigate complex cases effectively. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring patients receive appropriate care, maintaining regulatory compliance, and optimizing case outcomes in the fast-paced biotech industry.

What are the main challenges a Biotech Case Manager faces when coordinating care between patients, healthcare providers, and biotech companies?

A Biotech Case Manager often encounters challenges in ensuring seamless communication among patients, healthcare teams, and biotech firms, especially when dealing with complex therapies or clinical trials. Navigating insurance approvals and staying updated on rapidly evolving treatment protocols can also be demanding. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, adaptability, and the ability to advocate for patients while balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders. Collaboration and clear communication are essential to overcoming these hurdles and providing optimal support to patients.

Job description

Join Amgen’s Mission of Serving Patients

At Amgen, if you feel like you’re part of something bigger, it’s because you are. Our shared mission—to serve patients living with serious illnesses—drives all that we do.

Since 1980, we’ve helped pioneer the world of biotech in our fight against the world’s toughest diseases. With our focus on four therapeutic areas –Oncology, Inflammation, General Medicine, and Rare Disease– we reach millions of patients each year. Amgen is advancing a broad and deep pipeline of medicines to treat cancer, heart disease, inflammatory conditions, rare diseases, and obesity and obesity-related conditions. As a member of the Amgen team, you’ll help make a lasting impact on the lives of patients as we research, manufacture, and deliver innovative medicines to help people live longer, fuller happier lives.

Our award-winning culture is collaborative, innovative, and science based. If you have a passion for challenges and the opportunities that lay within them, you’ll thrive as part of the Amgen team. Join us and transform the lives of patients while transforming your career.

SENIOR MANAGER, PORTFOLIO ANALYTICS & STRATEGY What you will do

Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will lead portfolio analysis, performance tracking, and benchmarking, while owning Amgen’s Probability of Technical and Regulatory Success (PTRS) process across the R&D portfolio.

You will serve as a strategic thought partner to Product Teams, Therapeutic Area and Portfolio Governance, translating development risks, evidence, and uncertainty into decision-ready options. You will also oversee technology initiatives that enable PTRS and broader portfolio decision support, working closely with the Technology, Research, and Development organizations, Product Teams, and other cross-functional partners

Key Responsibilities PTRS assessment, strategy, governance, tools & technology
  • Lead and facilitate the enterprise PTRS assessment process with Product Teams and cross-functional experts at key development, investment, and governance milestones.
  • Own and continuously evolve the PTRS methodology, standards, benchmarks, guardrails, governance cadence, and documentation, including integration with portfolio and business-case processes.
  • Oversee development of new PTRS and risk‑assessment tools with the Technology organization and functional experts, including data products, evidence workflows, dashboards, and decision‑support capabilities.
Product Team partnership & decision support
  • Partner with Product Teams to assess risk across alternative target product profiles, indication and population choices, biomarker strategies, and clinical development options.
  • Facilitate evidence‑based discussions that distinguish established evidence from key assumptions, clarify what would confirm, challenge, or disconfirm the current risk posture, and help teams articulate trade‑offs across risk, value, timing, cost, and resource demand.
Portfolio reviews, performance & benchmarking
  • Support portfolio reviews, prioritization, and investment decisions by assessing portfolio‑level trade‑offs across risk, value, timing, cost, and resources and developing clear options for Governance and senior leaders.
  • Lead cross‑functional portfolio performance tracking and industry benchmark participation across cycle times, success rates, portfolio composition, productivity, throughput, and other development KPIs to identify trends, gaps, and improvement opportunities.
Executive insights & calibration
  • Deliver decision‑ready insights on portfolio risk, value, performance, and key trade‑offs for Product Teams, Governance, and senior leadership. Maintain consistency across PTRS, valuation, planning, and governance assumptions, and use historical outcomes, internal performance trends, and external benchmarks to calibrate assessments and improve decision quality over time.

  • Experience facilitating PTRS, probability of success (PoS), or comparable development risk assessments with cross‑functional subject matter experts.
  • Deep understanding of the end‑to‑end drug development process and the scientific, clinical, regulatory, CMC, operational, and competitive factors that influence program risk and probability of success.
  • Comfort using AI‑enabled tools and analytical capabilities to synthesize evidence, assess risk, develop insights, and improve decision support; experience applying these tools in an R&D, portfolio, or strategy setting.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear, actionable insights.
  • Executive presence and exceptional communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage senior leaders in both formal presentations and ad hoc discussions.
