Job description
The ASU Library seeks an innovative, collaborative, and adaptable Electronic Resources & Instruction Librarian (Assistant or Associate Librarian) to support the newly established John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering Library at the Downtown Phoenix campus. Operating within the robust, resource-rich ecosystem of the broader ASU Library, this position will connect digital collections infrastructure to medical education.
Reporting to the Director of the Medical Library, the successful candidate will leverage a deep understanding of electronic resource lifecycles, biomedical databases, and discovery systems to directly enhance student learning. The incumbent will translate their technical expertise into impactful instruction, teaching cohorts of physician-engineers how to navigate, evaluate, and master complex clinical and engineering informatics tools. This role is ideal for a professional who views seamless digital access as the vital first step toward exceptional health literacy and evidence-based medical education. Evidence of experience going beyond the traditional parameters of librarianship is highly encouraged at America's most innovative university.
The successful candidate will also play a key role in supporting the school's Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation process, ensuring that digital library resources, access mechanisms, and educational services demonstrably meet national medical education standards. As an Academic Professional, the incumbent is expected to maintain an active program of professional development, scholarship, and service aligned with ASU Library culture.
Library Statement:
The ASU Library is a center of learning, exploration and discovery. With nine locations, the library plays a vital role in expanding knowledge, cultivating community and inspiring innovation at ASU and in our communities. Students and faculty can access millions of information resources, world-class collections, outstanding study spaces, advanced data centers, and creative maker services. As supporters of student success, the library is a critical partner in realizing the New American University's mission of access, excellence and impact. ASU Library empowers people to unlock their potential, express themselves, and learn to thrive. For more information or to find library locations, visit lib.asu.edu.
About the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering:
The John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering represents a revolutionary leap forward in medical education. As one of the nation's newest medical schools, it is intentionally designed to merge clinical medicine with advanced engineering, technology, and data science. Our unique curriculum trains a new generation of "physician-engineers" who are equipped to both practice medicine and to actively invent solutions to complex healthcare challenges. Located in the heart of the vibrant Downtown Phoenix biomedical corridor, the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering offers an intimate, highly collaborative ecosystem where cutting-edge clinical training meets immersive research and technological innovation from day one. This library position will also provide unique opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across the downtown campus, including partnerships with the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, the College of Health Solutions, and the School of Technology for Public Health.
Essential Functions:
o Leads the local operational lifecycle-including the evaluation, implementation, assessment, renewal, and ongoing management-of electronic resources tailored to medicine and medical engineering within the university library's discovery ecosystem.
o Works in close coordination with the central ASU Library collection development and licensing teams to navigate systemic procurement workflows, vendor contracts, and university IT/security reviews for incoming digital assets.
o Connects backend database functionality with classroom learning by teaching medical and medical engineering students how to effectively navigate and search complex clinical and technical databases within their regular coursework.
o Partners with the Medical Library Director and library staff to design and deliver workshops, orientations, and curriculum-embedded sessions that teach advanced search mechanics and clinical tool navigation (e.g., PubMed/Medline, Scopus, IEEE Xplore).
o Ensures instructional initiatives actively foster medical students' competencies in lifelong learning and self-directed investigation in alignment with LCME standards.
o Develops dynamic asynchronous learning materials, anatomy platforms, training videos, online tutorials, and customized point-of-need research guides (e.g., LibGuides).
o Provides specialized research consultations, citation assistance, and support for in-depth literature reviews.
o Coordinates access, troubleshooting, and publisher relations for clinical databases, e-journals, and digital tools to guarantee seamless, equitable, and secure off-campus resource access.
o Collects, monitors, and analyzes database usage metrics (such as COUNTER data) to inform strategic collection development, alternative access models, and library metrics required for the LCME Data Collection Instrument (DCI).
o Partners in the daily operational success of the new library site by designing innovative, non-traditional reference workflows and on-demand information support pathways for a digital-first environment.
o Participates in library-wide initiatives, task forces, and campus or university committees as requested.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

- Familiarity with medical, clinical, and engineering databases and platforms (e.g., PubMed/Medline, Scopus, IEEE Xplore).
- Familiarity with medical school accreditation processes (e.g., LCME) or experience contributing data to an institutional self-study or Data Collection Instrument (DCI).
- Experience in collaborative projects or initiatives that integrate medicine or health sciences with technology or engineering.
- Demonstrated ability to translate technical system expertise, data literacy, or database architecture into clear, user-focused instruction or support.
