Zachry Nuclear Engineering (ZNE) is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer IV to join our growing engineering team in Stonington, CT, Perry, OH, or Charlotte, NC.
At Zachry Nuclear Engineering, our engineers support some of the nation's most critical energy infrastructure through engineering design, plant modernization initiatives, system modifications, equipment upgrades, and technical consulting services for commercial nuclear power clients.
As a Mechanical Engineer IV, you will take a leading role in the development of engineering solutions for complex plant challenges, capital projects, and modernization efforts. You will work alongside highly experienced engineers while providing technical guidance, supporting client initiatives, and contributing to projects that enhance plant safety, reliability, and performance.
Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineer IV independently performs advanced engineering and design activities supporting commercial nuclear power plants and related facilities.
The successful candidate will apply advanced engineering knowledge and professional judgment to evaluate plant systems, resolve complex technical issues, develop engineering solutions, and support major project initiatives. This role requires the ability to lead engineering assignments, coordinate technical efforts, and provide guidance to junior engineers while maintaining a high standard of technical quality.
The Mechanical Engineer IV serves as a key contributor to project success and may act as a technical lead for specific projects, systems, or engineering disciplines.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Design & Analysis
- Independently perform engineering calculations, analyses, evaluations, and design activities related to nuclear plant mechanical systems and equipment.
- Develop engineering solutions supporting plant modifications, upgrades, equipment replacements, and modernization projects.
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, engineering evaluations, and design packages.
- Apply engineering principles, regulatory requirements, industry standards, and applicable codes in developing engineering solutions.
- Evaluate complex technical problems and develop practical, cost-effective solutions.
Plant Systems Evaluation
- Evaluate the performance, reliability, and operability of plant systems and equipment.
- Investigate equipment failures, system issues, and emergent plant concerns.
- Develop recommendations that improve reliability, safety, maintainability, and operational performance.
- Support design modifications and engineering initiatives that address long-term plant needs.
Project Leadership
- Lead engineering assignments and manage technical scope for project activities.
- Coordinate engineering efforts across multidisciplinary teams.
- Plan and manage assigned work to support project schedules, budgets, and quality objectives.
- Support proposal development, project planning, and engineering estimates when required.
- Serve as a technical resource for project teams and stakeholders.
Client & Team Collaboration
- Work directly with utility clients to support engineering initiatives and project execution.
- Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, planning sessions, and client interactions.
- Present engineering products and recommendations to clients and technical review boards.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers.
- Support development of engineering best practices and technical standards.
Nuclear Quality & Compliance
- Ensure engineering products comply with applicable regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company procedures.
- Participate in technical reviews and quality assurance activities.
- Maintain awareness of current nuclear industry trends, technologies, and regulatory developments.
- Promote a culture of technical excellence, quality, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
Experience
- Minimum seven (7) years of relevant engineering experience with an active Professional Engineer (PE) license; or
- Minimum ten (10) years of relevant engineering experience without a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience supporting engineering design, analysis, plant modifications, system evaluations, or capital projects in industrial, energy, or nuclear environments.
- Demonstrated ability to independently execute engineering assignments and manage technical scope.
- Experience coordinating project activities and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Technical Knowledge
- Advanced knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices.
- Ability to perform and review complex engineering calculations and technical analyses.
- Understanding of engineering codes, standards, regulatory requirements, and engineering processes.
- Working knowledge of plant systems, equipment, and performance evaluation methodologies.
