Job description

Contemporaries is a government contracting firm supporting the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in its efforts to hire a Biologist III to support laboratory-based biomedical research. This is a long-term contract that will require full-time, onsite work in Durham, North Carolina.

The Biologist III will support interdisciplinary research examining how genetic and genomic variation, environmental exposures, and biological processes influence nervous system development, neurological disorders, neurodegeneration, brain aging, and nervous-system tumors. This position is well suited for an experienced scientist with a strong background in molecular and cellular biology who is comfortable independently conducting experiments, analyzing scientific data, and collaborating with multidisciplinary research teams.

Duties:

  • Design, conduct, and support laboratory experiments investigating genetic, genomic, and biological mechanisms associated with neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders.
  • Apply molecular and cellular biology techniques to investigate nervous system development, function, disease, and gene-environment interactions.
  • Support studies involving neurodegeneration, brain aging, cellular senescence, neuroinflammation, and neuronal/glial cell function.
  • Contribute to research involving glioma and other central or peripheral nervous-system tumors using genetic, genomic, cellular, and functional assays.
  • Collaborate with research scientists on experimental design, assay development, method development, and interpretation of experimental results.
  • Independently conduct high-priority research projects and assist with the development and evaluation of novel research approaches.
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and train staff on proper equipment use and laboratory techniques.
  • Assist researchers with experimental design, instrumentation, data acquisition, data analysis, and preparation of scientific figures.
  • Analyze and interpret research data while maintaining accurate and detailed electronic laboratory records.
  • Review scientific literature and recommend alternative or complementary experimental approaches when appropriate.
  • Assist with animal care and use procedures and provide training to laboratory staff as needed.
  • Prepare technical reports, abstracts, presentations, posters, manuscripts, and other scientific materials for publication or presentation.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a scientific field required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant research experience.
  • Strong background in biology, biochemical sciences, environmental science, or a related biomedical discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience with molecular and/or cellular biology laboratory techniques.
  • Experience designing, conducting, analyzing, and troubleshooting scientific experiments.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting complex biological research data.
  • Ability to independently manage research activities while collaborating effectively with scientists and laboratory personnel.
  • Strong scientific writing and communication skills, including experience contributing to technical reports, abstracts, manuscripts, posters, or presentations.
  • Experience with neurological, neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative, genomic, or related biomedical research is highly desirable.
  • Experience with laboratory instrumentation, assay development, imaging techniques, and/or animal research is preferred.
