How much do bioinformatics research jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 6, 2026, the average yearly pay for bioinformatics research in the United States is $94,474.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $67,500.00 and $129,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the most common collaborative projects for professionals in bioinformatics research?

Bioinformatics researchers frequently collaborate on interdisciplinary projects that involve both computational scientists and experimental biologists. Common collaborations include analyzing genomic data for disease research, developing algorithms for large-scale data interpretation, and creating bioinformatics tools for laboratory use. These projects often require regular communication with wet-lab researchers to ensure that computational findings align with experimental needs, as well as working closely with statisticians and software developers. Effective teamwork and the ability to bridge the gap between biology and data science are crucial for success in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bioinformatics Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bioinformatics Researcher, you need a strong background in computational biology, statistics, and molecular biology, often supported by an advanced degree in bioinformatics or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages (such as Python, R), bioinformatics tools (like BLAST, genome assembly software), and data analysis platforms is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across interdisciplinary teams and interpret complex data. These skills and qualities are essential for generating meaningful biological insights from large datasets and advancing scientific research.

What is bioinformatics research?

Bioinformatics research is a multidisciplinary field that combines biology, computer science, mathematics, and statistics to analyze and interpret biological data. Researchers in this area develop and use computational tools and techniques to understand complex biological processes, such as gene sequencing, protein structure prediction, and genome analysis. The goal is to extract meaningful insights from large datasets, which can lead to advances in medicine, agriculture, and environmental science. Bioinformatics research plays a crucial role in understanding diseases, developing new treatments, and personalizing healthcare.

Job description

Overview

Bruker is enabling scientists to make breakthrough discoveries and develop new applications that improve the quality of human life. Bruker's high-performance scientific instruments and high-value analytical and diagnostic solutions enable scientists to explore life and materials at molecular, cellular, and microscopic levels. In close cooperation with our customers, Bruker is enabling innovation, improved productivity and customer success in life science molecular research, in applied and pharma applications, in microscopy and nanoanalysis, and in industrial applications, as well as in cell biology, preclinical imaging, clinical phenomics and proteomics research and clinical microbiology.

Today, worldwide more than 11000 employees are working on this permanent challenge at over 90 locations on all continents. Bruker continues to build upon its extensive range of products and solutions, its broad base of installed systems and a strong reputation among its customers. Being one of the world's leading analytical instrumentation companies, Bruker is strongly committed to further fully meeting its customers' needs as well as continuing to develop state-of-the-art technologies and innovative solutions for today's analytical questions.

Bruker Spatial Biology is a rapidly growing and fast-paced biotechnology company with an R&D group in St. Louis, Missouri. We are committed to providing cutting-edge Spatial Biology products and services to the academic, biotech and biopharma sectors. Our team of dedicated scientists is passionate about Spatial Biology and recognizes its potential to transform our understanding and eventual diagnosis of disease. We offer competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, and a collaborative and stimulating research environment.

Bruker Spatial Biology is looking for an entry-level Bioinformatician to join our R&D department. The successful candidate will work with their Bioinformatic team leader to establish Bioinformatic data analysis solutions for our CellScapeTM platform. The Bioinformatician will furthermore play a role in performing CellScape data analyses for key customer collaborations and/or contract research projects. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in bioinformatics, image analysis and will already understand Spatial Biology. Experience in microscopy and/or histology is desirable but not a precondition.

In your role as a Bioinformatician, you will be given responsibility and ownership of your analysis projects. You will work on assignments that are complex in nature and require considerable judgment and initiative to solve problems. You will have room to maneuver and to execute your responsibilities creatively and effectively. Throughout your tenure you will be tasked with diverse projects, and you will need to be agile and flexible as you maneuver the complexities of each new problem. You will be expected to work reliably and to take on responsibility for the timely delivery of results. At any time, you should be ready to pivot as directives and roadmaps are aligned with a dynamic customer base.

This role reports to our Senior Bioinformatician and does not include management of direct reports. This role does not have wetlab responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Design, build, and maintain bioinformatics tools, libraries, and databases analyzing Spatial Proteomics / mIF data. Analyze and interpret large, complex biological datasets - including spatial proteomics and single-cell data - to support discovery of new drugs, therapies, and biologically meaningful patterns. Evaluate, test, and improve existing internal software solutions, and partner with software teams during active development cycles. Work cross-functionally with wetlab and software teams to critically evaluate data from multiplex biomarker assays and translate scientific needs into analysis solutions. Communicate findings to scientists, researchers, and stakeholders through clear written reports and presentations. Challenge the status quo by engaging in constructive critique of established practices and proposing better alternatives. Deliver projects and milestones on time, keeping leadership informed through routine progress updates. May participate in travel to conferences and tradeshows.

Qualifications

Requires a PhD with extensive bioinformatic analysis background Strong fluency in Python (required); working knowledge of R, MATLAB, or comparable scientific computing environments is a plus. Industry experience is not required Demonstrated ability to design and write clean, reusable functions, modules, and analysis pipelines - not just notebook-style scripting. Hands-on experience developing machine-learning or deep-learning models (training, evaluation, and deployment), particularly applied to imaging or single-cell data. Ability to communicate, educate and engage wet lab scientists Excellent collaboration and interpersonal skills

At Bruker, base salary is part of our total compensation. The estimated base salary range for this full-time position is between $86,500 and $153,500 provides an opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base salary for the role will depend on several job-related factors, including, but not limited to education, training, experience, the geographic location of the successful candidate, skills, competencies, job-related knowledge and travel requirements for this position. Full-time employees may also be eligible for a performance-related incentive in addition to a full range of benefits including 401(k) with company match, an employee stock purchase plan, medical and dental plans, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, employee assistance program and paid time off including vacation, sick time and holidays, and more.

Bruker is an equal-opportunity employer. We evaluate qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, and

other legally protected characteristics.

Certain positions at Bruker require compliance with export control laws and as a result, all interviewed candidates for all positions will be screened pre-interview to determine their eligibility in light of export control restrictions.
