How much do bioinformatics research jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for bioinformatics research in the United States is $94,474.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $67,500.00 and $129,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the most common collaborative projects for professionals in bioinformatics research?

Bioinformatics researchers frequently collaborate on interdisciplinary projects that involve both computational scientists and experimental biologists. Common collaborations include analyzing genomic data for disease research, developing algorithms for large-scale data interpretation, and creating bioinformatics tools for laboratory use. These projects often require regular communication with wet-lab researchers to ensure that computational findings align with experimental needs, as well as working closely with statisticians and software developers. Effective teamwork and the ability to bridge the gap between biology and data science are crucial for success in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bioinformatics Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bioinformatics Researcher, you need a strong background in computational biology, statistics, and molecular biology, often supported by an advanced degree in bioinformatics or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages (such as Python, R), bioinformatics tools (like BLAST, genome assembly software), and data analysis platforms is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across interdisciplinary teams and interpret complex data. These skills and qualities are essential for generating meaningful biological insights from large datasets and advancing scientific research.

What is bioinformatics research?

Bioinformatics research is a multidisciplinary field that combines biology, computer science, mathematics, and statistics to analyze and interpret biological data. Researchers in this area develop and use computational tools and techniques to understand complex biological processes, such as gene sequencing, protein structure prediction, and genome analysis. The goal is to extract meaningful insights from large datasets, which can lead to advances in medicine, agriculture, and environmental science. Bioinformatics research plays a crucial role in understanding diseases, developing new treatments, and personalizing healthcare.

Position Summary

The Bioinformatician is responsible for analyzing and interpreting large-scale genomics and epigenomics datasets generated from next-generation sequencing (NGS) experiments. This role involves developing and maintaining analytical pipelines, applying advanced statistical and computational methods, and collaborating with internal scientists and external customers to deliver high-quality biological insights.

The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in epigenetics and transcriptomics data analysis, experience with high-throughput sequencing technologies, and proficiency in bioinformatics software development and workflow automation. This position requires both independent problem-solving skills and effective collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret large-scale genomics and epigenomics datasets using advanced computational methods e.g., ML/DL, statistical model.
  • Perform standardized and custom bioinformatics analyses for external customers and internal research teams.
  • Develop, optimize, and maintain bioinformatics pipelines and analytical workflows for NGS assays.
  • Support assay development and novel analytical method implementation for transcriptomic and epigenetic datasets.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design experiments, interpret results, and provide analytical recommendations.
  • Communicate findings through reports, presentations, and customer interactions
  • Maintain and improve pipelines for assays including ChIP-seq, CUT&RUN/CUT&Tag, ATAC-seq, RNA-seq, Hi-C, DNA methylation, and single-cell sequencing technologies
  • Stay current with emerging bioinformatics methods, software, and best practices

Qualifications

Required

  • MS or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Computer Science, Statistics, or related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of post-graduate academic or industry experience in bioinformatics or computational biology.
  • Strong knowledge of epigenetics, gene regulation, and next-generation sequencing technologies.
  • Experience analyzing large-scale genomics, transcriptomics, or epigenomics datasets.
  • Proficiency in R and/or Python, Linux/bash scripting, and Git version control.
  • Strong statistical, analytical, and data visualization skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred
