Job description
The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine. The institution is seeking an exceptional, dynamic and visionary physician-scientist capable of leading this unique PhD program to train physicians to conduct basic and translational research related to human physiology and disease. Reporting, to Dr. Kevin J. Tracey, President of the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine; President and CEO and the Karches Family Distinguished Chair in Medical Research at The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research; Associate Dean of Research and Professor of Neurosurgery and Molecular Medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell; and Executive Vice President for Research at Northwell Health, the Dean will have the opportunity to lead a transformational graduate program within one of the nation's largest health care systems.
Northwell Health is New York State's largest private employer and one of the nation's largest integrated health care systems, delivers world-class clinical care throughout the New York metropolitan area, pioneering research at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, and is educating the next generation of medical professionals through the visionary Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
The Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine
The Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine, located in Manhasset, NY, offers an accelerated three-to-four-year PhD degree program for individuals with an MD (or equivalent) with a strong emphasis on translational research. The graduate school directly addresses the crucial need for physician-scientists trained to conduct clinically relevant research. Elmezzi's PhD program is designed to train exceptional physicians to conduct basic and translational research related to human physiology and disease. The PhD degree requirements are heavily focused on students conducting and completing a substantial body of scholarly research under the mentorship of Elmezzi faculty, coupled with a focused core curriculum that builds on the basic science courses taken during medical school and a small number of non-core courses (including Journal Club, Visiting Professor Seminar Series, Grant-writing workshop). The school functions year-round; it is tuition-free, and students receive a salary aligned with a medical resident. New students are accepted in late spring and normally begin their studies in July. Courses are held in the fall/winter and late winter/spring semesters, with laboratory research continuing throughout the summer.
Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research
The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, led by president and CEO, Kevin J. Tracey, MD, is Northwell Health's research enterprise. Home to over 50 research labs, 3,000 clinical research studies, 5,000 researchers and staff and publishing over 1,300 papers annually with 12 successful biotech start-ups, the Feinstein Institutes is raising the standard of medical innovation through its six institutes led by top researchers, most of whom are physician-scientists:
- Institute of Behavioral Science led by John Kane, MD and Anil Malhotra, MD
- Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine led by Yousef Al-Abed, PhD and Lopa Mishra, MD
- Institute of Cancer Research led by Jeff Boyd, PhD and David Tuveson, MD, PhD
- Institute of Health System Science led by Karina Davidson, PhD
- Institute of Molecular Medicine led by Betty Diamond, MD
- Institute of Translational Research led by Douglas Nixon, MD, PhD
Each institute has an impressive track record of producing knowledge that cures disease and improves patients' lives. Their work is transforming the treatment of conditions like Crohn's disease, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, sepsis, cancer, acute psychiatric illness and Alzheimer's disease. The Feinstein is the world's scientific headquarters for bioelectronic medicine, an emerging field that combines neuroscience, molecular medicine and bioengineering to tap into the nervous system to treat disease and injury without pharmaceuticals.
The Dean of the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Science will champion the program's mission to train physician-scientists who are equipped to conduct cutting-edge research and translate discoveries into improved patient care. The Dean of the Elmezzi Graduate School will be responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction and academic excellence of the graduate program. This includes curriculum development and oversight, faculty recruitment, development and engagement, student recruitment and mentorship, program administration and expansion, budget management, and fostering collaborations within the Feinstein Institutes, Northwell Health and the Zucker School of Medicine, and with external partners. The Dean will foster an outstanding teaching environment, while continuously improving and advancing the educational curriculum and training programs.
