Job description

The Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks applicants for a Laboratory Technician to become a participating member of the Xinghua Liao laboratories.
The Lab Technician will be responsible for consenting patients, collecting specimens, inputting and managing data, coordinating with lab personnel for sample distribution, and other lab duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:
  • Process biospecimens, properly store bio samples and keep all relevant records.
  • Coordinate shipping and delivery of bio samples.
  • Support lab members with collection of data.
  • Record accurate information and logs of experimental data.
  • Assist with the basic lab duties.

Qualified candidates must have:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: At least 1 year of lab experience, which may include student experience.

Preferred experience:
  • Experience with spreadsheets, electronic file structure, data entry/reporting tools and basic computer skills.
  • Data collection, file organization, and record keeping
  • Familiarity with administrative and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the healthcare system: including medical terminology, HIPAA/privacy regulations, and clinical procedures.

Physical Demands: This position will spend significant time working with patients, healthcare providers, and scientific researchers. Collaboration and coordination skills are essential. Clear verbal and written communication is critical. Also requires keyboarding, as well as some benchwork for bio sample processing.
This position is located in Charlottesville, VA and must be performed fully on site.
This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance.
Anticipated Hiring Range: $19-$21 per hour commensurate with education and experience.
