Job description


Position Summary
The Biology Department needs student Counselors (instructors) for the Camp La Sierra Experience, a joint Early Learning Opportunity Experience for students in the Riverside Unified School District, Alvord Unified School District, and the local community in cooperation with La Sierra University School of Education and various participating departments across the campus.
Role Description and Schedule
Bio-Camp Counselors guide small groups of campers through hands-on learning activities focused on life sciences. Campers rotate through two science-focused sessions each day, led or facilitated by the Counselors.
The Bio-Camp runs Monday through Thursday. Times for Community in week 1 is about 9 AM to Noon. RUSD students (session weeks 1 - 4) and AUSD (session weeks 5 & 6) run from approximately 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Each camper group attends for a 4-day session, with a new group starting each week.
The first week of camp begins June 15.
The grade ages of the campers are...
Grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, & 12 (Jr & Sr High School) week 1 in the mornings
Grades 7 & 8 (Junior High School) for week 1 in the afternoon
Grades 4, 5 & 6 (Elementary School) for weeks 2, 3, & 4 in the afternoon
Grades 4, 5 & 6 (Elementary School) for week 5 in the afternoon
Grades 7 & 8 (Junior High School) for week 6 in the afternoon
Time commitment is up to 6 hours per day when including prep and cleanup.
Experiences will include some lab skills and observations, microscope use, and possible live plant and animal experiences pending availability of the specimens. Some outdoor experiences for "field" observations and / or collection are planned as well as a visits to the World Museum of Natural History.
Wage Range: $17.00 - $17.50
Required Experience
Camp Counselors should have taken the entire General Biology Sequence, though this requirement may be waived at the discretion the Biology Chair or Laboratory Coordinator. Applicants must be registered as La Sierra University Students for either a Summer Program class, or for Fall Quarter.
  • Must be a La Sierra University student currently enrolled in either the Summer or Fall 2026 quarters
  • Must be LiveScanned (we will reimburse for LiveScan if hired) to be cleared by Human Resources
  • Must have taken BIOL111/L, 112/L, 113/L within last 3 years and passed with a grade of B or higher or been previous lab TA for the General Biology sequence in last 4 years
  • Must complete Mandated Reporter Training prior to starting work
