Job description

Job Description Summary:
This role plays a critical part in overall success of the farm operations within Aviagen's poultry farms. The Lab monitoring Technician has primary responsibility for collecting environmental, blood and swab samples to be transported back to the lab for analysis.
Job Description:
Applicants are not allowed to own any kind of birds due to the risk of possible disease transmission.
Must have a valid Driver's License
Schedule: Monday - Friday (6am-3pm)
Responsibilities:
  • Collect environmental samples (dust, show covers, etc.) from the farms.
  • Assemble supplies necessary to perform the sample collections.
  • Obtain blood samples and prepare associated files for genomic lab testing
  • Ensure the accuracy of samples taken for parental assignment
  • Assist with sample collection while remaining within the biosecurity matrix
  • Assist in basic laboratory work as requested by the supervisor.
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of DNA supplies to prevent work delays
  • Prepare and pack samples for shipment
  • Perform all routine departmental tests as directed by lab management
  • Responsible for the quality of work performed as well as the quality of the product produced.
  • Follow company policy and meet established procedures regarding bio-security, animal welfare, safety, ISO, drug, and alcohol policy.
  • Take on special projects and perform all other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:
  • Cannot own birds due to the risk of possible disease transmission.
  • High school diploma required.
  • Comfortable with the use of technology.
  • Ability to communicate orally, written, and via email.
  • Must possess the ability to apply common sense understanding to accomplish daily and weekly goals as well as deal with changing testing needs requested by supervisors.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States of America
  • Must successfully pass a background check and drug-screen prior to employment
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • Willing to travel to different farms in the Upper Cumberland area to collect samples.

Other Conditions:
  • Candidate must be comfortable handling farm samples while maintaining sample integrity and lab safety
  • Candidate should have the ability to remain cognizant of surroundings, task at hand, aberrant results, potential contamination, and general data collecting practices.
  • For bio-security purposes, candidate cannot own or house any wild or domesticated avian species
  • Candidate must adhere to a strict 72-hour quarantine period after contact with non-Aviagen avian species
  • Many tasks performed in this role may require repetitive bending, lifting, kneeling, standing, walking, and contact with live animals
