Operations Manager – Commercial Construction

Location: Calgary, Alberta

Position Summary:

We’re recruiting an experienced Operations Manager for an established commercial general contractor.

This position provides operational leadership and oversight across multiple projects and project teams. The Operations Manager supports project delivery, financial performance, client relationships, risk management, and the continued development of Project Managers and Project Coordinators.

The role carries meaningful autonomy to establish operational priorities and improve project management practices while remaining closely connected to the Leadership Team and active project portfolio.

The mandate is practical: understand where every project stands, identify where risk is building, and give project teams the leadership required to perform.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide operational leadership across multiple commercial construction projects, ensuring work is delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to established quality standards
  • Work alongside the Leadership Team to prioritize projects based on team capacity, schedule requirements, risk exposure, and profitability
  • Maintain oversight of project status, including budgets, forecasts, schedules, billing, cash flow, margin performance, and critical project issues
  • Assign and support project teams by establishing clear expectations, responsibilities, priorities, and performance standards
  • Coach and mentor Project Managers, Project Coordinators, and administrative staff, strengthening both individual performance and overall team capability
  • Conduct project turnover, progress, financial review, and close-out meetings
  • Review cost reports, forecasts, margin performance, and billing accuracy, recommending corrective action where required
  • Act as an escalation point for complex project, client, consultant, subcontractor, and commercial issues
  • Support project teams in resolving schedule delays, cost exposure, scope disputes, resource constraints, and other delivery risks
  • Partner with estimating and business development teams during bid reviews, project pursuits, and preconstruction planning
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and trade partners to support repeat and referral business
  • Identify and implement improvements to project management systems, reporting practices, workflows, and operational processes
  • Support the recruitment, onboarding, performance management, retention, and succession planning of project management personnel
  • Champion company safety and quality programs across the project portfolio
  • Participate in corporate and cross-functional initiatives focused on consistency, accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement

Qualifications & Experience:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in commercial construction
  • At least seven years of experience leading, supervising, or mentoring project and operational teams
  • Strong foundational experience in commercial construction project management, with the credibility to guide experienced Project Managers and project staff
  • Demonstrated success overseeing multiple concurrent projects and cross-functional teams
  • Strong experience with project budgets, cost control, forecasting, billing, cash flow, and margin analysis
  • Thorough understanding of commercial construction methods, project delivery models, contracts, scheduling, safety, quality, and regulatory requirements
  • Post-secondary education in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Business, or a related discipline is preferred
  • Equivalent industry experience will be considered for candidates with a proven record of successful project and team leadership
  • PMP, GSC, Lean, Six Sigma, Agile, or similar process-improvement credentials are considered beneficial
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction management platforms such as Procore, estimating software, and project financial systems

Key Competencies:

  • Credible, grounded operational leadership
  • Strong coaching, mentorship, and people-development capabilities
  • Advanced financial judgment and commercial awareness
  • Ability to identify project risk early and drive corrective action
  • Strong client, consultant, and trade relationship management
  • Clear communication with the ability to influence and build trust at every level
  • Sound judgment in fast-moving and high-pressure situations
  • Excellent organization across multiple projects, teams, and competing priorities
  • Commitment to accountability, safety, quality, and continuous improvement
  • High standards of ethics, respect, integrity, and professionalism
