Billing Specialist – Full Time – In-person role Durango, CO

Only Colorado residents will be considered.

Position Summary: The role of the Billing Specialist is responsible for managing healthcare accounts receivable and ensuring the accurate and timely processing of billing, payments, and account adjustments. Key responsibilities include submitting and resolving claims, posting payments based on explanations of benefits (EOBs), researching and correcting billing discrepancies, and maintaining accurate patient account records. The role also involves handling inbound calls from patients to address billing inquiries, explain account balances, assist with payment-related concerns, and provide exceptional customer service. Additionally, the Billing Specialist identifies error trends, supports workflow improvements, and collaborates with internal teams to optimize revenue cycle processes. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a patient-focused approach.

Qualifications: Our ideal candidate for our Billing Specialist position will have a high school diploma, or equivalent, an AA/AS in Healthcare/Accounting/Business, is preferred.

The candidate will also have 2-3 years’ experience working in a healthcare billing and collections. Experience in payer portal use, clearing house edits and claim follow up strongly preferred.

Salary: Starting at $21.25 - $27.30 per hour (non-exempt - hourly) and considers preferred experience, preferred education, and regional locale pay as described above.

Required Skills:

  • Working knowledge of medical billing and coding systems, including CPT, HCPCS, ICD, and DSM, with a strong understanding of the healthcare revenue cycle, including claims processing, payment posting, account reconciliation, collections, and reimbursement methodologies.
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance plans, and the ability to accurately interpret Explanation of Benefits (EOBs), process account adjustments, and manage insurance correspondence.
  • Ability to identify, investigate, and resolve billing errors, claim denials, account discrepancies, credits, refunds, and outstanding patient balances while maintaining appropriate supporting documentation.
  • Experience providing professional customer service through inbound and outbound calls, written correspondence, and other communications related to patient accounts, billing inquiries, collections, and payment arrangements.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, mathematical, and financial reconciliation skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment and make ethical decisions.
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems, Microsoft Office applications (particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook), internet-based applications, and standard office equipment.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage a high-volume workload, prioritize tasks effectively, and maintain accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact professionally and effectively with patients, staff, vendors, insurance representatives, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate commitment to maintaining confidentiality, privacy, and security of patient and organizational information in accordance with applicable regulations and organizational policies.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours, travel occasionally (if applicable), and assume additional responsibilities as needed to support departmental and organizational objectives.
