What is a Biglaw associate?

A Biglaw Associate is a lawyer who works at a large, prestigious law firm, often referred to as 'Biglaw' firms. These firms typically handle high-profile clients and complex legal matters, and associates are usually early- to mid-career attorneys who work under the supervision of partners. Biglaw Associates are known for working long hours, receiving competitive salaries, and often specializing in areas such as corporate law, litigation, mergers and acquisitions, or finance. Many pursue this role to gain valuable experience, training, and career advancement opportunities, though the work can be demanding and fast-paced.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biglaw associate?

To thrive as a Biglaw Associate, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school, bar admission, and strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Mastery of legal research databases (such as Westlaw and LexisNexis), document management systems, and proficiency in Microsoft Office are typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and the ability to communicate clearly under pressure distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure accurate legal work, efficient handling of large caseloads, and effective collaboration with clients and colleagues in a demanding environment.

What are the typical challenges faced by Biglaw associates in their first year, and how can they effectively manage them?

First-year Biglaw Associates often encounter challenges such as managing heavy workloads, meeting tight deadlines, and adapting to the fast-paced expectations of large law firms. Balancing multiple assignments from different partners and learning firm-specific procedures can be overwhelming. To manage these challenges, associates are encouraged to communicate proactively with supervising attorneys, prioritize tasks efficiently, and seek out mentorship or feedback from more experienced colleagues. Developing strong organizational skills and utilizing firm resources, such as training sessions and knowledge databases, can also help associates navigate their first year successfully.

Job description

Mid-Level Real Estate Associate – Los Angeles

Location: West Los Angeles, CA
Work Arrangement: Hybrid
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: $225,000–$275,000
Experience: 4–7 years
Visa Sponsorship: Open to visa transfers, including OPT and H-1B transfers

About the Role

A well-regarded boutique law firm is seeking a Mid-Level Real Estate Associate to join its dynamic and growing Real Estate Group in West Los Angeles.

The role involves drafting, reviewing, and revising real estate transactional agreements, managing and coordinating with partners and paralegals, and handling multiple deadlines and tasks for various clients.

This is an opportunity to join an established real estate platform within a collaborative, high-trust environment that operates with lean teams, direct partner access, and an emphasis on genuine client relationships.

Responsibilities
  • Draft, review, and revise real estate transactional agreements, including purchase and sale agreements and loan documentation.

  • Manage and coordinate with partners and paralegals on deals to ensure deadlines are met.

  • Manage deals from start to finish while coordinating with partners, paralegals, and clients.

  • Manage multiple concurrent deal timelines, deadlines, and tasks for various clients.

  • Work directly with clients throughout the transaction process.

Qualifications
  • 4–7 years of experience in real estate transactional law.

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.

  • Active California bar membership.

  • Real estate transaction experience including purchase and sale agreements, loan documentation, and JV/capital markets agreements.

  • Experience drafting and negotiating PSAs and financing documentation.

  • Experience with JV operating agreements, preferred equity, and syndication documentation.

  • Experience managing deals from start to finish.

  • Strong client-facing communication skills and comfort with frequent direct client interaction.

  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent deal timelines and deadlines.

  • Based in or willing to relocate to Los Angeles and able to work on a hybrid basis from the West Los Angeles office.

  • Comfortable with an 1,800-hour billable requirement.

Preferred Background

Candidates with experience at boutique or mid-size firms with direct client contact are encouraged to apply. A BigLaw real estate transactional practice background is also valued.

The strongest candidates will bring substantive transactional real estate experience rather than a purely litigation or non-transactional real estate background and will be comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $225,000–$275,000.

The firm is open to visa transfers, including OPT and H-1B transfers.
