What are Big Cats?

Big cats are a group of large wild feline species known for their size, strength, and predatory skills. This group typically includes lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, snow leopards, and sometimes cheetahs and cougars. They are found in various parts of the world and play crucial roles in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems as apex predators. Big cats are often threatened by habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict, making many of them vulnerable or endangered. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect these majestic animals.

What are some of the unique challenges faced by zookeepers who work specifically with big cats?

Zookeepers who care for big cats encounter unique challenges, including ensuring both animal and human safety due to the strength and unpredictability of these animals. Daily responsibilities often involve carefully planned feeding routines, enrichment activities to stimulate natural behaviors, and close monitoring for health or behavioral changes. Collaboration with veterinary staff is common, especially during medical procedures or training for husbandry behaviors. Maintaining secure enclosures and following strict protocols is essential, and keepers must be vigilant and adaptable to meet the animals' complex needs.
