What is the difference between Bicycle Frame Building vs Bicycle Repair Technician?

AspectBicycle Frame BuildingBicycle Repair Technician
CredentialsBasic mechanical skills, sometimes certifications in welding or metalworkMechanical skills, certifications in bike repair or mechanics
Work EnvironmentWorkshop or manufacturing setting, focus on custom or production framesBike shops, repair centers, mobile repair services
Industry UsageManufacturing, custom bike building, artisanal workshopsBike maintenance, repair, troubleshooting

While Bicycle Frame Building involves designing and constructing bicycle frames, often requiring metalworking skills and specialized tools, Bicycle Repair Technicians focus on diagnosing and fixing issues on existing bikes. Both roles require mechanical aptitude, but frame builders work more on fabrication and design, whereas repair technicians handle maintenance and repairs. Understanding these differences helps enthusiasts and professionals choose the right career path or service.

What are some typical challenges encountered when working as a bicycle frame builder, and how can job seekers prepare for them?

Bicycle frame builders often face challenges such as maintaining precise tolerances, working with various frame materials (like steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber), and ensuring structural integrity throughout the fabrication process. Attention to detail and strong manual dexterity are essential, as small errors can affect the bike's performance and safety. To prepare, job seekers should develop strong metalworking or composite fabrication skills, become familiar with industry-standard tools, and seek opportunities to learn from experienced builders through apprenticeships or workshops.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bicycle Frame Builder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bicycle Frame Builder, you need proficiency in metalworking, welding or brazing techniques, and a solid understanding of bicycle geometry and design. Familiarity with tools and machinery such as TIG welders, lathes, tube benders, and CAD software is typically required, along with knowledge of relevant safety standards. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and a passion for craftsmanship set exceptional builders apart in this field. These skills ensure the production of high-quality, safe, and precisely engineered bicycle frames that meet both performance and aesthetic standards.

What is bicycle frame building?

Bicycle frame building is the craft of designing, constructing, and assembling the main structural component of a bicycle—the frame. This process involves selecting appropriate materials such as steel, aluminum, titanium, or carbon fiber, cutting and shaping the tubing, and welding or brazing the pieces together. Skilled frame builders ensure the frame is strong, lightweight, and properly aligned for optimal performance and safety. Many frame builders create custom frames to fit individual riders’ needs and preferences. The craft combines engineering, metalworking, and design expertise.

XDS is seeking a Director of Sales to join us on this ground-floor opportunity to establish X-LAB in the North American market. You'll be building our dealer network from zero to 100+ stores in our first year, working directly with independent bike shops and regional chains. This role requires a hands-on approach - you'll be the one knocking on doors, building relationships, and proving our value proposition store by store. This role features a clear path for advancement as North American operations expand.
THIS ROLE IS BASED IN SANTA MONICA: 5 DAYS A WEEK ONSITE
What You'll Do
1. Direct Sales & Market Development
  • Personally prospect, pitch, and close deals with independent bike shops, specialty dealers, and small regional chains
  • Build relationships one store at a time through in-person visits and consultative selling
  • Own the entire sales cycle from lead generation to contract signing
  • Achieve Year 1 target of 500 contracted dealers

2. Build & Lead a Sales Team
  • Recruit and manage 3-5 sales representatives as the business grows
  • Provide hands-on training and mentorship while remaining quota-carrying
  • Establish sales processes, territory management, and performance metrics
  • Balance individual contributor work with team leadership

3. Establish Market Foundation
  • Develop dealer onboarding and support processes
  • Gather market intelligence and customer feedback for product development
  • Represent XDS at trade shows and industry events
  • Create scalable frameworks for future expansion

You're a Great Fit With:
  • 7+ years of B2B sales experience with proven track record of opening new accounts
  • Experience selling to small and medium businesses (individual stores, 2-5 location chains)
  • Demonstrated ability to build business from zero-to-one in a territory or product line
  • Strong relationship-building skills and consultative selling approach
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to "roll up sleeves"
  • Genuine passion for cycling, outdoor sports, or performance products

You're a Spectacular Fit With:
  • Experience in diverse industries with SMB sales focus (consumer products, sporting goods, technology, B2B services, outdoor gear, etc.)
  • Background with dealer/distributor or specialty retail networks
  • Technical product knowledge and ability to learn complex product details
  • Bilingual capabilities

Success Metrics
  • 100+ U.S. dealers contracted and actively retailing XDS/X-LAB products
  • 3-5 person sales team hired and productive
  • Revenue targets achieved with documented, repeatable sales process
  • Strong dealer satisfaction and brand recognition in target market

Work Environment
This role requires regular Los Angeles office presence for team collaboration and product training, combined with extensive field travel. Remote work is not available for this position due to the hands-on nature of the role and need for close coordination with leadership. We expect this leader in-office at least 2 days a week: (onsite; ≥ 50 % travel across the U.S. and periodically to Asia HQ)
Our Compensation and Benefits
  • Competitive base salary plus uncapped commission structure
  • Demo bike fleet and comprehensive travel allowances
  • Generous time off policy
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Office space in beautiful Santa Monica, California

Equal Opportunity
XDS is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all team members.
