Overview
Pending approval of the budget by the Hamilton County School Board.
This position posting is for a full-time Bible teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. As a middle/high school, the position could potentially cover middle school or high school, depending on areas of expertise of candidates. The position will add to our full-time Bible position to create opportunities for collaborative planning. Qualified applicants must have strong skills in the areas of standards-based planning, instructional best practices, and intentional use of assessments. Applicants must be eager to work cooperatively within department and school team settings. Applicants must be organized and possess outstanding communication skills in working collaboratively and effectively with students, teachers, parents, and administrators. Teachers who are also interested in serving in HS or MS coaching positions are encouraged to apply.
Signal Mountain Middle/High is a 6-12 school located on Signal Mountain, TN, just outside of Chattanooga. We are the only International Baccalaureate school in Hamilton County, offering both the prestigious IB Middle Years Program (MYP) and Diploma Program (DP). Although known for our academic accomplishments, SMMHS also provides students with many other experiences, including State-Championship athletics programs, award-winning performing and visual arts programs, and opportunities for students to learn and grow through a variety of extracurricular activities. While knowledge of IB requirements is preferred, training is also available for teachers who are new to IB.

About the HCS Bible Program:
The Bible elective program in Hamilton County Schools helps middle and high school students gain a broad appreciation of the Bible as a significant work of literature and an influential text in the formation of western civilization. The academic study of the Bible provides students with a broader awareness of ancient cultures and allows them to better understand biblical allusions in various works of literature, art, and music. Additionally, utilizing the Bible as the textbook, students engage with the many historical events recorded in the Bible, as well as the diverse social customs of the ancient world.
Through studying the Bible, students gain an increased understanding of the Bible's influence on culture, customs, and world history, while also learning to critically engage with this rich literary work without bias for or against any religious group or denomination. It is envisioned that students will develop an increased appreciation of the Bible with a more in-depth understanding of the text's historical, sociological, and literary merit relative to both ancient culture and their contemporary world.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
  1. Teaching & Learning - Deeply understand the Tennessee state standards and establish clear learning targets for every lesson. Build rigorous and aligned assessments and consistently implementinstructional best practices. Follow Hamilton County Schools' instructional framework, including:

  2. Classroom Culture: Build a safe and productive classroom culture. Positive relationships are evident, procedures are clear, and the classroom is safe and secure for learning to unfold. Student and teacher interactions promote a growth mindset.
  3. Family & Community: Consistently develop strong relationships with students' families while diligently informing parents of expectations, positive news, and/or concerns about their children. Provide opportunities for parents to be involved in their children's learning.
  4. Professional Responsibilities: Actively participates in professional learning communities (PLCs) with colleagues in order to improve teaching and student learning. Reflect on instruction and leadership while contributing ideas, expertise, and time to the mission and goals of the school.

Qualifications
We are seeking teaching candidates who are:
  • Committed to high academic achievement and high expectations for all students
  • Able to be a positive team-player and communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, students, and families
  • Open to being coached and receiving feedback in order to advance learning and growth for students
  • Professional with high personal standards and integrity
  • Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of 12 college/university credit hours in biblical studies (to exclude coursework biblical languages, doctrine, theology, worldview, and ethics). Examples of appropriate coursework might include Old Testament Survey, New Testament Survey, Life of Jesus, Minor Prophets, etc.
  • Tennessee Teaching Certification: For middle school teaching candidates, a valid state of Tennessee teaching certification with an endorsement in a middle grades academic content area, Bible, English (6-12), or history (6-12) (or willingness to pursue certification as a job-embedded licensure candidate) is required. For high school teaching candidates, a valid state of Tennessee teaching certification with an endorsement in Bible, English, or history (or willingness to pursue certification as a job-embedded licensure candidate) is required. If you hold a teaching license in another state, you must apply for a Tennessee teaching license.

Salary is based on a combination of relevant education and experience.
