Experience with BI tools like Tableau, Power BI, SQL, and data visualization platforms is commonly required, along with knowledge of data warehousing concepts. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication help BI Analysts translate complex data into actionable business insights. These skills are essential for enabling data-driven decision-making and driving organizational growth.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Business Intelligence (BI) roles, and how can they be overcome?

Professionals in Business Intelligence often encounter challenges such as integrating data from multiple sources, ensuring data accuracy, and communicating technical findings to non-technical stakeholders. These challenges can be overcome by developing strong data management practices, staying updated with the latest BI tools, and cultivating effective communication skills. Collaborating closely with IT, analysts, and business teams is also key to ensuring data-driven decisions are aligned with organizational goals.

Job description

The Senior BI Architect is a senior-level technical leader responsible for designing, governing, and scaling enterprise business intelligence platforms. This role goes beyond dashboard development and includes ownership of system BI architecture, data modeling standards, platform governance, and team mentorship.

This position serves as the bridge between business stakeholders, data engineering, and analytics teams, ensuring that solutions are built on a robust, scalable, and secure architecture rather than ad hoc implementations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Architecture & Platform Ownership
  • Define and lead the overall application and date architecture strategy across the organization.
  • Design and implement scalable semantic models, data marts, and enterprise BI frameworks.
  • Establish standards for data modeling (star schema), naming conventions, and reusable datasets.
  • Lead environmental strategy including development, testing, deployment pipelines, and lifecycle management.
  • Ensure solutions are optimized for performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
Governance & Standards
  • Establish and enforce BI governance practices, including data quality, security (RLS), and access controls.
  • Define best practices for software development, version control, and release management.
  • Review and approve technical solutions to ensure alignment with architectural standards.
  • Lead efforts around audit readiness, compliance, and documentation standards.
Leadership & Mentorship
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to BI developers and analysts.
  • Guide analysts on proper use of certified datasets vs. creating redundant or siloed reports.
  • Conduct code reviews and enforce development standards across the BI team.
  • Act as the escalation point for complex technical challenges.
Development (Hands-On Leadership)
  • Design and develop complex BI solutions including semantic models, dashboards, and paginated reports.
  • Develop advanced DAX, Power Query (M), and T-SQL for high-performance analytics.
  • Build and optimize data models that support enterprise-wide reporting needs.
  • Develop Power Automate workflows for operationalizing BI processes.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with data engineering teams to define data pipelines, data structures, and ingestion strategies.
  • Translate business requirements into scalable, production-grade BI solutions.
  • Influence upstream data design to improve downstream analytics usability.
AI & Advanced Analytics Enablement
  • Leverage Microsoft Copilot, Fabric AI capabilities, and approved tools to enhance development efficiency and insight generation.
  • Define responsible and effective usage patterns for AI-enabled analytics within BI workflows.
  • Stay current with evolving industry trends and recommend adoption where appropriate.

Job Requirements:

  • 7+ years of experience in enterprise BI development.
  • Demonstrated experience designing BI architecture and scalable data models.
  • Strong expertise in Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL Server, and enterprise data platforms.
  • Advanced proficiency in DAX, Power Query (M), and T-SQL.
  • Proven ability to lead technical initiatives and mentor junior team members.
  • Strong understanding of BI governance, security, and deployment best practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Microsoft Certification in BI Tools.
  • Experience in regulated or compliance-driven environments.
  • Experience implementing enterprise BI governance frameworks.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and version control for BI.
