What is a BI manager?

BI Managers, or Business Intelligence Managers, oversee the strategy, implementation, and management of business intelligence systems within an organization. They lead teams that analyze data to help companies make informed business decisions and improve processes. Their responsibilities include managing BI tools, coordinating data analysis projects, and ensuring that data-driven insights align with organizational goals. BI Managers often collaborate with IT, business stakeholders, and executive leadership to support data-driven decision making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BI manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BI Manager, you need strong analytical skills, expertise in data modeling, and a background in statistics or computer science, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, SQL, and data warehousing systems, as well as certifications like CBIP, are typically required. Leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help BI Managers effectively guide teams and translate business needs into data-driven solutions. These abilities are crucial for delivering actionable insights and driving strategic decision-making within organizations.

How to become a business intelligence manager?

To become a business intelligence manager, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in fields like computer science, data analysis, or business administration, along with several years of experience in data analysis or BI roles. Developing skills in data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI, understanding databases and SQL, and obtaining certifications like Certified Business Intelligence Professional can enhance prospects for this role.

How do BI managers typically collaborate with other departments to ensure data-driven decision-making?

BI Managers regularly work with stakeholders across departments such as marketing, finance, and operations to understand their data needs and provide actionable insights. They facilitate communication between technical teams (like data analysts and engineers) and business units, ensuring that data solutions align with organizational goals. This collaboration often involves gathering requirements, delivering reports or dashboards, and providing training to non-technical users. Strong interpersonal and project management skills are essential for BI Managers to bridge gaps and drive effective data-driven strategies.

Job description

Overview

The Manager of Supply Chain Business Intelligence leads the strategy, development, and delivery of analytics and reporting solutions that drive smarter decisions across Replenishment, Demand Planning, Inventory Management, and broader Supply Chain functions. This role sits at the intersection of business operations and data, translating complex operational questions into scalable BI products (dashboards, models, and self-service tools) that improve service levels, reduce waste, optimize inventory, and support AI-enabled planning.

The ideal candidate is equal parts storyteller, technologist, and operator — someone who can partner with broadly to frame the right question, build the data model to answer it, and coach teams to sustain it.

This position is located at our Store Support Office in Phoenix, Arizona, and operates on a hybrid schedule (in office Tuesday - Thursday).

Overview of Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and execute the BI roadmap for Supply Chain in alignment with Inventory Management, Replenishment, Demand Planning, and IT priorities.
  • Serve as the primary BI partner to Supply Chain leadership, translating business strategy into measurable KPIs and reporting products.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop business analysts

Analytics & Reporting Delivery

  • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of Supply Chain dashboards and reports in Power BI (and adjacent tools such as Excel, Fabric, SQL, Azure Synapse).
  • Build and maintain semantic models, DAX measures, and Power Query transformations that provide a single source of truth for in-stock, on-hand, forecast accuracy, service level, shrink, and replenishment health.
  • Partner with Merchandising, Store Operations, DC Operations, and Finance to ensure metrics are consistent, trusted, and actionable.

Business Partnership

  • Embed with Demand Planners, Replenishment Analysts, and Store Support teams to identify pain points and convert them into BI solutions.
  • Support key programs (e.g., SRS, FARM, RELEX, self-distribution expansion) with analytics for pilots, go-lives, and post-implementation performance monitoring.
  • Deliver executive-ready insights for SteerCo, All-Hands, and cross-functional reviews.

Data Governance & Enablement

  • Champion data governance, master data quality, and standardized definitions across Supply Chain metrics.
  • Drive adoption of self-service BI; build training, documentation, and enablement paths for business users.
  • Partner with IT/Data Engineering on data pipelines, warehouse structure, and security models.

AI & Innovation

  • Identify opportunities to embed AI, machine learning, and Copilot capabilities into planner workflows (exception management, weather-driven risk, promotional lift, lifecycle management).
  • Prototype and pilot new analytics capabilities; scale what works.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Data Analytics, Information Systems, or related field experience.
  • 6+ years of progressive analytics/BI experience, with 2+ years leading a team.
  • Advanced proficiency in Power BI (DAX, Power Query/M, data modeling), SQL, and Excel.
  • Strong understanding of retail supply chain concepts: replenishment, forecasting, inventory turns, service levels, DC/store flow, shelf life, and shrink.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate ambiguous business needs into structured analytics deliverables.
  • Excellent communication skills with proven ability to present to executive audiences.

Preferred

  • Experience in grocery, fresh, or specialty retail; exposure to systems such as RELEX, SAP, Blue Yonder, o9, or Manhattan.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Databricks, or Python/R.
