Is BI developer a good career?

A BI developer designs and implements data analysis solutions using tools like SQL, Power BI, or Tableau, making it a valuable role in data-driven organizations. The career offers opportunities for growth, competitive salaries, and requires skills in data modeling, programming, and business analysis. It is suitable for individuals interested in technology, analytics, and problem-solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BI Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BI Developer, you need expertise in data modeling, SQL, and data warehousing concepts, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or SSRS, as well as experience with ETL processes and possibly certifications like Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate, is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating business needs into actionable insights. These skills and qualifications enable BI Developers to deliver accurate reporting and analytics that drive informed business decisions.

What are BI Developers?

BI Developers, or Business Intelligence Developers, are IT professionals who design, develop, and maintain business intelligence solutions such as dashboards, data visualizations, and reporting systems. They work with data warehouses, databases, and analytics tools to help organizations make data-driven decisions. BI Developers often use technologies like SQL, Power BI, Tableau, or SSRS to transform raw data into actionable insights. Their work supports business operations by providing timely and accurate information for strategic planning.

What Is a BI Developer?

A business intelligence (BI) developer takes data and turns it into knowledge that a business or organization can use to carry out its goals. Their job is to use their data analysis skills and technical experience to develop solutions to problems, create technical reports, and make recommendations. By creating a data model or using other analytical tools, these developers can help increase productivity, provide improvements, or cut costs.

How much do BI developers earn?

BI developers typically earn a median salary ranging from $70,000 to $110,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Professionals with advanced skills in SQL, data visualization tools, and certifications may earn higher salaries. Entry-level positions generally start lower, while senior roles can exceed $120,000.

What jobs make $1,000,000 a year?

In the context of a BI Developer, earning $1,000,000 annually is uncommon and typically involves executive-level roles such as Chief Data Officer or Chief Technology Officer, or highly successful entrepreneurs in data-related businesses. These positions often require extensive experience, leadership skills, and sometimes equity or profit-sharing arrangements. Most BI Developers earn significantly less, with top salaries reaching several hundred thousand dollars, but reaching the million-dollar mark usually involves senior management or ownership stakes.

What are some key challenges BI Developers face when integrating data from multiple sources?

BI Developers often encounter challenges such as data inconsistency, varying data formats, and duplicate records when integrating data from different sources. Ensuring data quality and accuracy requires strong ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) skills and attention to detail. Collaborating closely with database administrators and business analysts is crucial to understand data structures and business requirements, which helps in designing effective data integration solutions. Overcoming these challenges not only improves reporting accuracy but also enhances decision-making across the organization.

Job description

AVE is seeking a Business Intelligence Developer to support the continued growth of our reporting, analytics, and decision-support capabilities.

Reporting to the VP, Revenue & Data Strategy, this role will serve as a key technical partner responsible for developing, maintaining, and validating business intelligence solutions that support operational and strategic decision-making. The Business Intelligence Developer will translate defined business objectives and reporting requirements into trusted, scalable Power BI solutions by integrating data from multiple business systems, developing data models, writing SQL and DAX, and ensuring reporting accuracy through data validation and reconciliation.

Success in this role requires strong technical skills, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to build relationships across the organization. The ideal candidate is someone who can interpret business needs, ask thoughtful questions, communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and translate business requirements into meaningful reporting solutions. While the initial focus is technical development and reporting execution, this role offers the opportunity to grow into a trusted business intelligence partner who contributes to the continued evolution of AVE's analytics capabilities.

This is a hybrid position, working both at a property and at home. There is one position available, however, we are open to the role being based in Philadelphia/Suburban Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Northern New Jersey; Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona; or Austin, Texas.

Responsibilities:

Business Intelligence Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain Power BI dashboards, reports, scorecards, and datasets
  • Develop DAX measures, KPIs, and calculations that support business reporting needs
  • Translate business requirements into effective reporting and visualization solutions
  • Optimize report performance, usability, and scalability
  • Support the development of reporting tools that identify opportunities, risks, trends, and key performance drivers

Data Integration & Modeling

  • Integrate data from multiple business systems, including property management, CRM, marketing, financial, and operational platforms
  • Develop and maintain SQL queries, views, and data transformation processes
  • Build and maintain scalable data models that support consistent reporting
  • Support the consolidation of data across furnished and apartment housing platforms to create unified portfolio reporting
  • Identify opportunities to improve data accessibility, reporting automation, and reporting efficiency

Data Quality & Governance

  • Validate reporting outputs against source systems and operational reports
  • Investigate and resolve data discrepancies
  • Develop and maintain reconciliation processes for key business metrics
  • Document report logic, calculations, data sources, and business rules
  • Support reporting standards and best practices that promote consistency and transparency

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Partner with business leaders and cross-functional teams to understand business objectives, operational processes, and reporting priorities
  • Interpret business needs and translate them into effective reporting and analytics solutions
  • Build collaborative relationships across departments to support reporting initiatives and continuous improvement
  • Communicate technical concepts, assumptions, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Identify opportunities to automate reporting processes and improve operational efficiency

Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Business Analytics, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Finance, Mathematics, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience developing business intelligence or reporting solutions
  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI, including report development, DAX, Power Query, and data visualization best practices
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with relational databases
  • Experience with data modeling and data transformation concepts
  • Experience validating and reconciling reporting outputs against source systems
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to build relationships, interpret business needs, gather requirements, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a collaborative environment

Preferred

  • Experience with Yardi, Yardi Data Connect, or similar property management platforms
  • Experience integrating data from multiple systems and data sources
  • Experience with APIs, Microsoft Fabric, Azure, or cloud-based reporting environments
    • OTA XML data structures - Orion's integration language is XML-based, which is a different skillset than typical REST/JSON API work
  • Experience in multifamily housing, real estate, hospitality, or related industries

Compensation

  • $85,000+/year

Individual compensation decisions will vary as the annual base compensation range provided is approximate and determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, qualifications, education, and geographic location. AVE also offers additional bonus potential paid out on a monthly and/or quarterly basis (dependent upon the position), which is not included in the base compensation range listed above. All applicants who meet the general job requirements as outlined in the description are encouraged to apply.
