CAREER DESCRIPTION SUPERVISING COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN (Technical Services Unit) Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization. THIS RECRUITMENT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC RECRUITMENT/POSITION INFORMATION This recruitment is being conducted to establish an Open Eligible List to fill current and future vacancies in this class until the next recruitment. The eligible list established may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower-level classifications throughout the County of Orange.

THE DEPARTMENT The Orange County Sheriff's Department is among the largest in the nation, providing exemplary law enforcement services focused on a collaborative, dedicated and innovative approach to public safety. Our nearly 4,000 sworn and professional staff are committed to serving the needs of Orange County through 6 organizational Commands comprised of 23 Divisions. Together, these Commands and Divisions provide services including land, air and sea-based patrol, custody operations, investigative services, emergency management, coroner services, forensics, and specialty operations, among an extensive list of other public safety services.

THE DIVISION The Technology Division consists of approximately 150 personnel organized in six areas that specialize in specific operational and technical units, including: Infrastructure, Desktop Support, Business Solutions, Operations, Radio Microwave, and Security. Each section maintains a staff of Managers, Engineers, Technicians, and support staff to provide a high level of operational and technical expertise to various public safety functions including Law Enforcement, Fire Services, Emergency Medical Services, Lifeguard, Park Rangers, Public Works, Local Government, Courts, County and City jails, and Probation facilities. The Division provides centralized countywide coordinated communications systems for all local public safety agencies; installation and maintenance of communications and electronic equipment (microwave equipment, 9-1-1 dispatch equipment, mobile and portable radios, closed circuit television, surveillance, security electronic systems within the jail system, sound and video systems); operational and maintenance support to the coordinated communications systems; engineering and frequency management; and serves as the central coordinator/program manager for the operation and maintenance of the 800 MHz Countywide Coordinated Communications System (CCCS) and 900 MHz paging system.

The Division is also responsible for all Information Technology operations across the entire Sheriff's Department. This includes application development and support, help desk support, desktop support, mobile and MDC support, storage and server support, network and CCTV support, and network security operations. THE OPPORTUNITY The Technical Systems Unit (TSU) is a highly technical and specialized unit.

The unit is responsible for the design, maintenance, and installation of 800 MHz CCCS radio dispatch consoles, base station radios, in-building Bi-Directional Amplifiers, OA1 radios, HCA MED9 dispatch center and ambulance radio certification, and the 900 MHz paging systems. Furthermore, the unit deploys and maintains in-field maintenance, and any additional requests for services, maintenance, installations or repair of mobile and portable radio units, and equipment throughout the County. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE The Supervising Communications Technician assigned to the Technical Systems Unit (TSU), field team specialty, will be responsible for evaluating, assigning, authorizing, and confirming the technical services provided by the field and dispatch technicians.

They will serve in a supervisor capacity with a minimum of eight direct reports ranging from Utility Drivers to Senior Communications Technicians. The Supervising Communications Technician will oversee all services involving dispatch systems calls, (PVS) Patrol Video Systems installations and in-field maintenance, and any additional requests for services, maintenance, or repair of mobile and portable radio units and dispatch consoles and equipment throughout the County as requested by our partner agencies. The Supervising Communications Technical will also be responsible for employee coaching and development, annual evaluations, and ongoing cross-training while keeping up to date with growing technologies.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate will have sound knowledge and technical skill to perform all field technician responsibilities, leadership skills, professionalism, and understanding the laws and policies. Must be able to make sound judgment, and use technical and logical discretion, and demonstrate the interpersonal skills needed to mentor their team. License Required: Possession of a valid General Radio Telephone Operator's License issued by the Federal Communications Commission. Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher is required by date of appointment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony or be on any form of probation and must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner. Background screening includes completing of a Personal History Form, interview with a background investigator, polygraph test and fingerprinting. Some of the areas considered in the background screening include prior convictions, traffic violations, drug use and credit problems, employment history, professional references and education verification (i.e

degree, license, or official transcripts. Foreign degrees require an evaluation of U.S. equivalency by an agency that is a member of the National Association of Credentials Services N.A.C.E.S.)

Environmental Conditions The incumbent will be required to work in various environments as a field service technician varying from the Division shop, County hospitals and dispatch centers. Must be able to drive in all weather conditions and in potentially difficult terrain dependent upon the facility they are assigned to service. Travel will be done within a County assigned vehicle.

Shifts may be various and up to a 24/7 basis when covering an on-call shift.
