Job Summary

The Senior Generation Systems Specialist (Controls) applies advanced expertise in control systems to support the design, operation, and optimization of energy infrastructure. This role involves developing and maintaining automated control strategies for generation equipment, ensuring reliable and efficient performance through platforms such as SCADA, PLCs, and Distributed Control Systems (DCS). Responsibilities include overseeing system integration, troubleshooting complex control-related issues, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. The specialist also mentors junior staff and plays a key role in aligning SCADA/PLC/DCS architectures, logic, and workflows with operational objectives across generation, transmission, and distribution environments.

What you will do

  • Independently performs work on a variety of complex assignments requiring in-depth analysis to determine appropriate solutions to solve problems.

  • Monitors multiple assigned system(s) or process(es) to assure sustained, safe, and efficient operation of the systems and overall plant within prescribed quality and regulatory boundaries.

  • Coordinates and drives the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of plant processes and systems with generating plant personnel.

  • Assists with gathering accurate, reliable data by determining proper measurement methods, tools, and calibration procedures.

  • Uses control plans and audits to ensure the methodology is standardized and is followed, recommending changes to hardware and settings for assigned system(s).

  • Ensures linkage between plant processes and plant/unit financial and operating goals and regulatory requirements, including stakeholder communications and management.

  • Provides technical assistance as needed, e.g., design of experiments and statistical analysis. Leads plant operation and engineering staff in troubleshooting process or system issues.

  • Interfaces with engineers and plant operations staff to transfer technical knowledge as needed. Facilitates process improvement teams as needed.

  • Recommends and develops justification for capital or maintenance projects to restore or improve performance of assigned systems.

  • Manages coordination of plant operation and engineering staff during plant evaluation and testing of new products to determine the effect of changes on plant equipment and system performance. Identifies test methods and establishes standards for reporting.

  • Explains technical problems to internal stakeholders and accurately prepares detailed documents such as technical studies and project documentation for future reference.

  • Manages project budgets, including processes accruals, and communicates anticipated changes in the budget. Applies FIN 102 requirements when executing requisitions, receipts, and related project tasks.

  • Understands various corporate financial statements and can differentiate how project implementation and property unit catalog (PUC) citations will impact the rate payer versus the shareholder, including providing input to PUC modifications as appropriate.

  • Serves as fleetwide subject matter expert on assigned issues or components, communicating best practices and lessons learned across Generation facilities.

  • Engages in other duties as needed that support Alliant Energy's Values and helps deliver on our Purpose to serve customers and build stronger communities.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Emphasis in science, math, business, or related area preferred.


Required Experience

  • 8 years of relevant experience

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • Knowledgeable in the application and theory of Statistical Process Control and data collection and analysis.

  • Able to use advanced mathematical concepts (data distribution, complex equations, sampling plans, control charts, correlation, etc.)

  • Familiar with financial management and business practices.

  • Practical knowledge of engineering concepts and disciplines.

  • Must possess solid interpersonal skills including team facilitation and negotiation.

  • Working knowledge of Physics and Chemistry.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of plant processes, products and equipment. Knowledge of, or experience with change management in a transformational environment.

  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive work environment.

Pay Range:

$106,000 - $186,000

This position is eligible to participate in the annual incentive program. The final salary offered will generally fall within this range and is dependent on various factors including but not limited to the responsibilities of the position, experience, skill set, internal pay equity and other relevant qualifications of the applicant.
