What does best 1099 mean in a job context?

'Best 1099' typically refers to desirable or highly rated independent contractor opportunities, named after IRS Form 1099 used for reporting non-employee income. These jobs offer flexibility, the ability to be your own boss, and often competitive pay. Popular 1099 jobs include freelance writing, consulting, delivery driving, and gig economy roles. Choosing the 'best' 1099 job depends on your skills, interests, and desired work-life balance.

What are the common challenges faced by professionals working as 1099 independent contractors?

As a 1099 independent contractor, you may face challenges such as managing your own taxes, securing consistent work, and handling benefits like health insurance and retirement savings on your own. Unlike traditional employees, 1099 contractors are responsible for self-employment taxes and must keep detailed financial records for quarterly filings. Additionally, you are often required to juggle multiple clients, contracts, and deadlines simultaneously, which requires strong organizational skills and self-discipline. Networking and continually marketing your services are also essential for maintaining a steady workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 1099 independent contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 1099 Independent Contractor, you need expertise in your chosen field, a solid understanding of self-employment requirements, and the ability to manage projects independently. Familiarity with invoicing software, time-tracking tools, and basic accounting systems like QuickBooks is common and beneficial. Strong communication, self-motivation, and organizational skills help you build client relationships and effectively manage multiple assignments. These skills are critical to ensure reliable service delivery, client satisfaction, and successful business operations as an independent professional.

Job description

Turn your love of community into a career.

Best Version Media is looking for a driven, community-minded sales professional to join us as a Media Sales Representative.

About Best Version Media

Founded in 2007, Best Version Media (BVM) has spent nearly two decades bringing North American communities together one person, one home, one business at a time. Today, BVM publishes over 1,300 local magazines and reaches billions of digital impressions across North America, helping thousands of local business owners grow.

What You'll Do

This is a field-based, in-person sales role. You'll build your own book of business in your local territory, on a schedule you control, selling advertising placements across BVM's local print magazine and companion digital, social, and website products.

  • Consult: Meet face-to-face with standout local business owners to showcase what makes their community great.
  • Strategize: Build powerful, multi-channel branding programs using our media suite, print, digital, social, websites, and reputation management.
  • Scale: Leverage our proven training and time-tested sales system to grow your own book of business, building community engagement that pays you and your community for years to come.

What You'll Earn

This is a 1099 independent contractor role with no base salary or draw (full commission). Representatives earn a recurring commission on sales, with commission rates generally ranging from 70-80% based on monthly sales volume and performance relative to the baseline* cost structure. Bonuses are available during start-up and on an ongoing basis.

*Baseline is the back-end cost associated with the magazine & digital product's cost to produce, distribute, bill clients, etc, and does not come out of the representative's pocket.

What You Bring

  • Sales Acumen: A drive to help local businesses grow through the art of advertising sales, strong communication, negotiation, and closing skills. Experience with digital or print advertising is a plus, but the right attitude matters most; we provide the training.
  • Growth Mindset: A resilient, never-give-up attitude paired with a proactive approach to learning and continuous self-improvement.
  • Community Focus: A genuine interest in building and nurturing relationships with local business owners, putting their success first.

Why Best Version Media?

  • Support: Comprehensive training and ongoing professional support, we're a community in ourselves.
  • Proven Success: Nearly 20 years serving local communities, with over 1,300 publications and a reach of billions of digital impressions across North America.
  • Culture & Rewards: Our why is simple: bring communities closer, one relationship at a time, and we celebrate the people who make that happen.
    • Earn incentive trips, awards, and friendly contests along the way, all within a flexible schedule built to keep you present for what matters most: friends and family.
