What is a behavioral health associate?

Behavioral Health Associates are professionals who support individuals experiencing mental health or substance use challenges. They typically work in hospitals, residential treatment centers, or outpatient facilities, helping patients with daily activities, monitoring their well-being, and assisting with therapeutic interventions under the supervision of licensed clinicians. Their role is crucial in creating a safe and supportive environment, encouraging patients’ participation in treatment, and communicating observations to the healthcare team. Behavioral Health Associates may also help with crisis intervention and de-escalation, ensuring that patients receive compassionate and effective care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a behavioral health associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Behavioral Health Associate, you need a background in psychology or a related field, knowledge of mental health disorders, and often a relevant certification such as Certified Behavioral Health Technician (CBHT). Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR), crisis intervention techniques, and de-escalation tools is typically required. Compassion, patience, and strong interpersonal communication skills help you effectively support patients and collaborate with healthcare teams. These skills ensure the safety, well-being, and recovery of patients in behavioral health settings.

What are some common challenges behavioral health associates face during their shifts, and how can they effectively manage them?

Behavioral Health Associates often encounter challenging situations such as managing patients in crisis, de-escalating tense interactions, and maintaining safety in a dynamic environment. It is vital to stay calm under pressure, use therapeutic communication techniques, and follow established protocols to ensure both patient and staff safety. Regular team debriefings, ongoing training, and support from colleagues and supervisors also help associates process difficult experiences and maintain their own well-being.

This role is ideal for a California-based professional eager to help clients foster personal growth and navigate life's challenges through effective therapeutic practices.

About the Organization

At Rise Within Psychotherapy, we believe in creating a supportive environment that prioritizes both client and clinician well-being. We recognize the importance of work-life balance, and our flexible work setting promotes autonomy in managing your schedule. Our team fosters an atmosphere where counselors are encouraged to connect and collaborate with peers through optional consultation groups, enhancing both professional development and clinical efficacy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide high-quality virtual therapy sessions to diverse client populations, ranging from adults to adolescents and couples, tailoring sessions based on your areas of specialty.
  • Establish and manage a flexible caseload, determining the number of clients you see each week, with a typical range of 10 to 30 sessions per week.
  • Employ evidence-based therapeutic techniques and approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to address client issues.
  • Maintain detailed case documentation in compliance with California laws and HIPAA standards to ensure client confidentiality and safety.
  • Collaborate with clinical leadership to develop treatment plans that align with clients' unique needs and attend optional peer consultation sessions for continued learning and support.
  • Contribute meaningfully to the community by promoting mental health awareness and compassion through your practice, one session at a time.
Patient Population / Client Focus

As a remote LPCC, you will provide essential mental health support primarily to an adult and adolescent population. Your role will involve working with individuals who may be dealing with a range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, and life transitions. You will also have the opportunity to support couples in navigating their dynamics, providing a safe space for open communication and conflict resolution.

Qualifications
  • Must possess an active LPCC license in good standing within the state of California.
  • A minimum of 1 year of clinical experience post-licensure, demonstrating your commitment and skill in providing quality mental health care.
  • Proficiency in delivering trauma-informed and culturally responsive care.
  • Expertise in utilizing telehealth platforms effectively and professionally.
  • Solid grounding in various therapeutic frameworks such as CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR, among others.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, showing a commitment to inclusive care.
  • Supervision eligibility or experience supporting associate therapists is a valuable asset, enhancing our team's collaborative environment.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Our compensation package ranges from $90,000 to $110,000 annually, supplemented with a comprehensive benefits plan to support your overall health and wellness.
  • Enjoy the security of no-show protection in our fee-for-service pay structure, ensuring your hard work is compensated fairly.
  • Access to dedicated administrative support for billing, scheduling, and communication, enabling you to focus on your clients.
  • In addition to competitive pay, you’ll receive access to robust clinical support, including opportunities for continuing education and case consultations.
Career Growth Opportunities

At Rise Within Psychotherapy, we are committed to fostering your professional development. With opportunities to engage in peer consultation, ongoing training, and participation in workshops, you will enhance your skills and expand your therapeutic repertoire. Your growth is essential to our mission, and we provide resources and avenues for advancement within our organization.
