TITLE: Substitute Paraprofessional/Teacher Assistant/Teacher Aide
DEPARTMENT: Special Education
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education
SUPERVISES: N/A
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The position of Substitute Paraprofessional/Teacher Aide has been established for the purpose of maintaining the appropriate classroom environment so that students may learn effectively when permanent paraprofessionals are absent.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Reinforces instructional and behavior objectives of classroom teacher.
  2. Work with and assist students in small groups or 1:1.
  3. Escort or supervise students in hallways, locker rooms and lunchrooms.
  4. Assist in taking students to and from the bus, including handling wheelchairs, as necessary.
  5. Assist students in the bathroom, with transfers, change their diapers, and other personal hygiene as needed.
  6. Makes copies of materials for class.
  7. Advise secretary and teacher of absences.
  8. Notify teacher/supervisor of student and staff concerns.
  9. Model appropriate behavior.
  10. Assist with general paperwork and clerical tasks.
  11. Assist with correcting/grading papers.
  12. Know pertinent school classroom policies and procedures
  13. Observe policy of confidentiality regarding knowledge of students.
  14. Adhere to schedule and meet program needs.
  15. Assist with modifying and implementing accommodations for students.
  16. Assist with behavior management.
  17. Conduct testing and assessment as requested.
  18. Coordinate Special Education semester exam accommodation schedule.
  19. Perform other appropriate teacher assistant responsibilities

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer and office equipment, including, but not limited to, the telephone, fax machine, and copier.
2. Generally the job requires a lifting ability of 70 lbs.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a 9.5 month contract position with salary and benefits determined by Board of Education.
