Overview
Collects and prepares blood specimens for laboratory testing, represents the laboratory to patients and their families. Reviews physician orders, obtains clinical and demographic information, prints draw lists, and verifies patient identification and correct specimen type for tests requested.
Responsibilities
Phlebotomy technique, competence in venipuncture, micro collection, bleeding times, blood cultures, therapeutic phlebotomy, Blood Bank specimens. Ensures positive patient identification Prioritizes phlebotomy duties to achieve efficiency. Readily responds to changes in work schedules and volumes. Continually uses time to departmental advantage when work schedules are light. Answers the telephone to schedule tests, relays accurate information and responds to stat draw requests from all patient care areas in a STAT manner. Efficiently directs calls to appropriate area or person. Obtains and enters information into the L.I.S. and the H.I.S., registers patients into HIS. Updates all information, demographics and insurance. Orders test information, prints labels and labels specimens at point of service. Maintains equipment and inventory of needed supplies. Keeps the patient drawing area clean and tidy. Maintains phlebotomy basket / cart; ensuring safety measures are followed. Recognizes the Phlebotomist-Registrar's role as it relates to the overall function of the laboratory, patient care, customer service and the business of healthcare. Conscious of biohazard safety as it relates to the job; use of the pneumatic tube system, manual delivery of specimens to main lab, disposal of blood collection equipment, changing of gloves between patients. Bedside manner and attitude toward the patient. Performs medical necessity checks prior to out-patient phlebotomy. Ensures specimens are packaged properly and delivered to Specimen Processing in a timely manner. Serves as a resource and teaches new employees.
Qualifications
Will consider entry level graduates.Able to communicate effectively, pleasantly, cooperatively and discreetly with patients, physicians, hospital employees and the public. Able to work under pressure. Willingness to increase knowledge of laboratory/hospital functions. Demonstrates creativity and initiative in problem solving.
Phlebotomy certification within 1 year.
