Overview

Joby Aviation is seeking a hands-on engineerย withย strong fundamentalsย to join our Battery Safety team as a Battery Test Systems Engineer.ย As a key member of thisย highย performingย team,ย you will have aย varietyย of responsibilities.ย You willย primarilyย own theย design,ย integration,ย and data automationย of customย testย equipmentย that will beย usedย for both certificationย andย the development ofย current and next generationย propulsion batteries.ย Additionally, you will supportย theย expansion ofย theย team'sย testing labsย to ensureย continuousย improvementย andย theย development of new capabilities.ย This work will be crucialย forย making ourย batteriesย theย safestย in theย industry.ย 

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and deploy custom electromechanical test equipment, integrating with high-voltage batteries and data acquisition (DAQ) hardware to support continuous battery safety developmentย 
  • Develop,ย maintain, and execute battery safety and cellย lab's expansion plans to cover continuous improvement and new R&D/certification needs
  • Collaborate with data, cell, and battery safety teams to architect robust data pipelines and interactive dashboards, enabling real-time querying, automated reporting, and accelerated decision-making
  • Maintain comprehensive hardware/software documentation and equipment compliance, ensuring battery safety lab operations continuously align with certification requirements and local municipal permitting standards (building, electrical, fire, and air)
  • Executeย batteryย andย cellย testing inย support ofย battery system developmentย and certificationย 
  • Support certification efforts across all programs byย developing andย maintainingย meticulous documentation of testย equipmentย ย 
Required
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of experience OR Advacned degree and 3+ year of experience in mechanical engineering, thermals, physics, or related fieldย 
  • Basicย understanding of battery hazards and failure modes (e.g., thermal runaway, electrical shorts, mechanical abuse)ย 
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and foundation inย mechanical and electrical engineering fundamentalsย ย 
  • Fundamental understanding of sensing and data acquisition principlesย ย 
  • Willingness to get hands dirty and work with team-members on all levels ofย project, from planning to final cleanupย 
  • CAD experience, CATIA preferredย 
  • Python or other language for data processing and visualizationย 
  • Great written, verbal, and presentation skillsย 
Desired
  • Advanced degree in a relevant engineering or science field and 8+ years of experienceย 
  • Knowledge of li-ion cell technology and experience with battery testing/designย 
  • Experience developing and maintaining data pipelines and custom visualization dashboards orย analysis toolsย ย 
  • Experience working with abuse testing at cell/module/pack levels and familiarity with safety testing standards such as UN 38.3, SAE 2464, RTCA DO-311ย 
  • LabVIEW or other language for interfacing with data acquisition hardwareย 
  • Familiarity working with high voltage systemsย ย 
  • Hands-on experienceย designing and commissioning battery test equipment (e.g., Arbin, Maccor,ย Neware) including fixture and instrumentation designย 
Additional Information

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $134,100 - $184,300/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
