Battery Process Engineer information

What does a Battery Process Engineer do?

A Battery Process Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and overseeing the manufacturing processes involved in producing batteries, such as lithium-ion cells. They work to improve efficiency, quality, and safety in battery production by developing and refining procedures, selecting appropriate materials, and troubleshooting issues. Additionally, they collaborate with teams across research, development, and manufacturing to scale up new battery technologies from prototype to mass production. Their role is critical for ensuring that batteries meet performance and reliability standards required for various applications, including electric vehicles and consumer electronics.

What is the difference between Battery Process Engineer vs Battery Manufacturing Technician?

AspectBattery Process EngineerBattery Manufacturing Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; often requires experience in process designHigh school diploma or technical certification; on-the-job training
Work EnvironmentDesigning, optimizing, and overseeing manufacturing processes in labs or production facilitiesOperating machinery and performing manual tasks on the production line
Industry UsageInvolved in process development, quality control, and process improvementFocuses on assembly, equipment operation, and quality checks

The Battery Process Engineer focuses on designing and improving manufacturing processes, requiring technical expertise and engineering credentials. In contrast, the Battery Manufacturing Technician handles day-to-day production tasks, operating equipment and ensuring product quality. Both roles are essential in battery manufacturing but differ in responsibilities, skills, and work scope.

What are some common challenges faced by Battery Process Engineers during scale-up from laboratory to production?

Battery Process Engineers often encounter challenges when translating lab-scale processes to full-scale manufacturing, such as maintaining quality and consistency in large batches, optimizing equipment for high throughput, and ensuring safety protocols with reactive materials. These professionals must troubleshoot unexpected variations, coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams (like R&D, quality assurance, and maintenance), and refine processes to meet both performance and cost goals. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential for overcoming these hurdles and ensuring smooth production ramp-up.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Battery Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or materials engineering, experience with battery manufacturing processes, and often a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as AutoCAD or MATLAB), Six Sigma methodologies, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are essential to ensure efficient battery production, maintain high quality standards, and drive innovation in the rapidly evolving energy storage industry.

Job description

About Base
Base is America's next-generation power company. We're rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization-electricity-by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that is transforming today's fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. We are engineers, operators, and creatives solving some of the most complex, interdisciplinary challenges of our time.
About the Role
We are seeking a swing shift production engineer to join our team and drive the scalable, high-quality assembly of our distributed battery systems. As Base rapidly expands deployment of home battery systems, this role will own critical production processes, ensuring efficient manufacturing that meets growing demand while upholding rigorous standards for safety, reliability, and performance in energy storage products.
You will serve as a hands-on engineer on the production floor, collaborating closely with Hardware Design, Supply Chain, Quality, and Deployment teams to optimize assembly lines, resolve bottlenecks, and implement improvements that directly accelerate our ability to deliver resilient power solutions to thousands of homes.
What You'll Do
  • Own core production processes for Base battery system assembly
  • Identify and eliminate bottlenecks through root cause analysis, process optimization, and implementation of lean manufacturing principles to improve yield, cycle time, and throughput.
  • Develop, validate, and document standardized work instructions, fixtures, and tooling to enable consistent, high-quality output at scale.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives, incorporating data-driven insights from production metrics, failure analysis, and quality feedback.
  • Collaborate with design engineering to ensure manufacturability of new product introductions and support smooth transitions from prototype to volume production.
  • Drive safety and compliance in production environments, with particular emphasis on high-voltage systems and energy storage hazards.
  • Leverage AI tools to automate and process manufacturing data, enhancing performance and decision-making.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of hands-on manufacturing or process engineering experience in high-volume production environments, ideally with batteries, power electronics, or complex electromechanical assemblies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in lean manufacturing, Six Sigma methodologies, PFMEA, and statistical process control.
  • Proficiency with production tools and systems (e.g., PLC programming, MES, ERP, jig/fixture design, automation integration, Ignition Automation).
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort working with data tools (e.g., SQL, Python, JMP, KNIME, or similar) to drive decisions.
  • Proven ability to thrive in fast-paced, cross-functional settings with a bias for action and ownership of results.

About this Team
Makers of the machines that power tomorrow. The Manufacturing Engineering team owns the interface between a proof of concept and a scalable, profitable product. Our team focuses on how a product can be built, defining the process technology and equipment solutions along the way. We are the feedback loop with the product design team to ensure designs are manufacturable both at cost and scale. The Manufacturing Engineering team owns every aspect of bringing the physical mechanisms of manufacturing a product into the factory.
Please note: Base is a startup, which means priorities shift and evolve quickly. Your role may expand or change based on the needs of the business at any given time, so the responsibilities listed may not be exhaustive.
Our Values
  • First Principles Thinking: Question assumptions. Principles > rules.
  • Operate at Base Pace: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.
  • Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble, and maintain a growth mindset.
  • Everyone's an Owner: Follow through on commitments and own results.
  • Strong Opinions, Loosely Held: Drive clarity and make calls with imperfect information.
  • Committed to the Mission: Rebuilding the grid is a big challenge. We work hard because we care deeply about the impact we're creating. We work in-person. It's not a 9-to-5. We are all-in.
  • Fun & Optimism Coexist with Grit: Collaboration and celebration coincide with the intensity of building real things.
Do the best work of your life at Base.
