Description This position with the Garden City Fire Department responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls, trains with and operates firefighting equipment, participates in fire prevention programs, fire suppression activities, public education, hazardous materials, station maintenance, and training activities. Receives direction from and reports to a Company Officer or Acting Company Officer, Lieutenant, Battalion Chief or Acting Battalion Chief, Fire Marshal, or the Fire Chief. Note: Part-time or volunteer positions are also available.
***The GCFD Recruitment/Hiring Team will review applications the last Friday of each month. Examples of Duties Firefighter I Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescues, entry and ventilation salvage work, Haz-Mat, and other customer service calls. Operates equipment as required.
Performs cleanup and overhaul work, checks equipment for ready to respond status. Assists in maintaining fire apparatus, equipment, fire stations and grounds. Assists in fire investigation as required.
Participates in continued training and instruction programs by individual study of technical matters, attends scheduled drills and classes relating to firefighting techniques, hazardous materials, first aid and emergency medical treatment. Tests hose; performs hydrant inspections and tests. Participates in company fire inspections, public education function.
Performs other related work as required or assigned. In absence of supervisor, may be assigned responsibilities on an out-of-class basis. Firefighter II Responds to alarms and emergency incidents and public service calls.
Drives apparatus and related equipment, operates fire apparatus and assists crews on scene with their duties when needed. Performs cleaning and mechanical work to prepare apparatus in a ready to respond status. Assists in maintaining apparatus, equipment, and fire department buildings and grounds.
May participate in fire investigation, continuing education, and advanced training programs and drills. Performs fire company inspections for fire prevention and pre-fire planning. Participates in periodic testing of pumps, hydrants, hose, ladders and other apparatus and equipment.
Assists in the training of new firefighters in fire suppression, equipment operation, etc. Conducts fire prevention and public education programs. Typical Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Firefighter I - Ability to operate large and heavy automotive equipment.
Ability and physical strength to work under pressure in emergency situations and maintain good physical condition. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with city employees, officials and the general public. Firefighter II - Knowledge of hydraulics, pump pressures and hose layout requirement.
Knowledge of street patterns and the physical layout of the City. Ability to operate large and heavy automotive equipment. Ability and physical strength to work under pressure in emergency situations and maintain good physical condition.
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with city employees, officials and the general public. Ability to use Microsoft word, outlook or related programs. Education, Certification and Experience: Firefighter I Firefighter I certification High school diploma or GED Fire Science Degree or closely related field preferred Valid Class B driver's license within one year of employment Firefighter II High school diploma or GED Preferred candidate will have or be pursuing an Associate's Degree in Fire Science or closely related field Minimum of three years firefighting experience of which two years must be full time paid firefighting Licenses and Certifications: Valid State of Kansas Non-Commercial Class B License Firefighter I and II and Driver/Operator certifications National Incident Management System 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications Supplemental Information Equipment/Tools Used: Various Motor Vehicles, rescue tools, Computer, SCBA Compressor, Fire Apparatus, Ladders, Fire Equipment, Medical Equipment, Radio, Protective Gear, Breathing Apparatus, Saws, Generators & Fans, HAZMAT Equipment, General Office Equipment Physical Characteristics: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
