Job description

APPLY BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2026
The Basketball Sports Official must have an enthusiastic personality with an ability to develop relationships with participants, parents and other staff. They must have extensive knowledge of basketball and a desire to use that knowledge to grow professionally with the YMCA. They should present themselves in a professional, caring manner and have excellent communication and conflict resolution skills. They should also learn and understand the YMCAs mission and best practices in order to help foster and ensure all sports practices, games and events at the gym have a mission driven atmosphere.
Schedule: Fall: Wednesdays & Thursdays, September-November, 5:00pm-9:00pm; Winter: Saturdays, December-February 8:00am-6:00pm; Summer Monday-Friday 5:00pm-9:00pm; hours may vary. Officials hired for this position may work in other sports programs outside the basketball program at the youth sports official rate. Officials will be able to select a home branch but must be willing to travel to other YMCAs and offsites as needed. Officials must have consistent availabilty during the season to be considered. Officials are expected to referee our full-court basketball games for divisions ages 9 & up.
Officials without any certification will start at $15/hr. Officials with a certification and under 2 years of experience will start at $20/hr. Officials with a certification and 2 or more years of experience will start at $22/hr.
Responsibilities include:
Officiate full court basketball games for the YMCA with enthusiastic passion and sound judgment
Engage and build relationships with coaches, participants and parents
Assist with projects as needed
Monitor all activities in the gym or field including proper use of equipment
Assure a fun, safe and quality experience that is in accordance with Association policies/guidelines. This includes monitoring language and behavior of participants.
Clean the gym or field as needed
Ensure safety for all participants with a knowledge of rules and precautions
Understand and enforce all rules for game play set by the Association
Assist with sports department marketing
Ability to provide a high level of customer service and conflict resolution
Possess strong sense of responsibility
Energetic, devoted, mission driven, confident, respectful, adaptable, team oriented individual
Punctual
Working knowledge of rules for basketball required
Ability to work with children of all ages required
Ability to accept supervision, critique and guidance required
Good communication skills with children, coaches and parents required
Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and self-control required
Willing to officiate at other YMCA of NWNC branches if needed
Current certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/Oxygen administration or obtain certification within 30 days of hire
