Job description

Position Summary
The Detroit Tigers are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Assistant Groundskeeper to help lead day-to-day field maintenance and crew management at Comerica Park. This role supports both the grounds and tarp crew, ensuring the playing surface consistently meets Major League Baseball standards. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator, a proactive problem solver and thrives in a fast-paced weather-dependent environment.
Key Responsibilities
*Assist the Head Groundskeeper in planning, executing and overseeing all field maintenance activities, including mowing, edging, irrigation, infield skin management, mound and plate repair and overall turf health.
*Assist with administrative duties - including labor budget, and scheduling of crew
*Help manage, train, schedule grounds crew and tarp crew staff
*Help lead on-field preparation for all games, batting practice and special events, ensuring all MLB compliance and safety standards are meant
*Maintain proper supplies such as clay, conditioner, chalk, paint, fertilizers, tools and equipment
*Monitor weather forecasts and adjust field maintenance plans in real time, including coordinating field tarp, delays, and schedule changes
*Assist with crew's uniform ordering and distribution
QUALIFICATIONS
*Bachelor's degree in turfgrass Management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field
*Minimum 2 years of professional baseball field management experience (Milb or MLB preferred)
*Strong understanding of turfgrass science, infield clay management, irrigation systems, pesticides, and athletic field best practices
*Excellent leadership, communication and organizational skills
*Ability to move quick and make informed decisions in weather-affected situations and during schedule changes
*Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing an elite MLB-quality playing surface
*Ability to multitask in a high pressure, fast paced environment, while having a positive team-focused attitude and willingness to pitch in wherever needed
*Must be able to:
- Work long hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, extended homestands, outside events, consecutive days in a row
-Lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 lbs.
-Work outside in varying weather conditions
