Job description

The Activity Instructor- Master Barber plans and implements a Barbering curriculum that will prepare students to pass the Barber Apprentice examination and work as a barber in a local shop.
Reports To: Program Director
Location:
Hours: Up to 10 hrs per week; Non Exempt
Major Duties:
  • Create and facilitate robust curriculum in Barbering
  • Develop partnerships with local organizations to provide free student haircuts so the class gets to practice the craft.
  • Teach students the etiquette and professionalism of barbering.
  • Responsible for the setup, operation and clean up of activities and the organization, inventory and storing of relevant supplies and equipment.
  • Articulate expectations to students and colleagues on what aspect of the class work needs to be strengthened and practiced in preparation for the next class.
  • Participate in staff trainings, meetings and development activities as specified
  • Attend all staff meetings and staff development training sessions, as specified.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED required; licensed Master Barber with a minimum of 5 years' experience required
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred.
  • Experience in developing group lesson plans and leading group activities preferred.
  • Must be able to engage young people and set structure and limits in a group setting.
  • Demonstrated written, verbal, organizational, and prioritization skills.
  • Capability to transition easily between working independently with a high degree of self- initiative and working a part of a team.
  • Proven participant sensibility and ability to communicate with staff on all levels.
  • Prior experience teaching preferred
  • Must have a commitment to work from a trauma-informed, strength-based and youth and family development perspective.
