Barback

The newly reimagined Whaling Bar is looking for a Barback to join the team.

This is not your run-of-the-mill Barback position but more of Bartender apprenticeship, so we are looking for candidates with bartender aspirations. The Whaling Bar is a combination of fine-dining level food and service combined with a cocktail program on par with the finest speakeasy, so we need a reliable team-oriented person who is also excited to learn the skills, techniques, and knowledge necessary to someday be an exceptional bartender.

Barback’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Keep the bar stocked with liquor, syrups, glasses, napkins, and all other necessary items before, during and at the end of service hours.
  • Constantly keeping up with clean glassware and polishing.
  • Prepare garnishes, refill ice wells, change beer kegs and restock napkins and straws.
  • Make syrups and batches by method of cooking and vacuum sealing. Detailed, intricate recipes and methods to follow. Recording pars and consistently keeping up with spreadsheets.
  • Clean up spills, remove the glassware and organize the counter. Greet, refill water for guests and reset mise en place. Keep the bar area neat and clean.
  • Handle emergency situations like cleaning up broken glasses and clearing up clogged drains.
  • Occasionally, pour beer or wine for guests when asked by a manager.
  • Ordering produce, garnish, N/A, purees, syrups at the end of each night according to pars without over / under ordering.
  • Available to work 8 or more hours on your feet with occasional heavy lifting, and constant side work.
