Banking Software Engineers are specialized professionals who design, develop, and maintain software systems used in the banking and financial industry. Their work includes creating secure platforms for online banking, payment processing, fraud detection, and transaction management. They ensure that banking software complies with industry regulations and is robust against security threats. These engineers collaborate closely with business analysts and other IT professionals to deliver solutions that meet the evolving needs of banks and their customers.

What are some common challenges faced by banking software engineers when integrating new technologies with legacy banking systems?

Banking Software Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating modern solutions with legacy banking systems, such as outdated codebases, strict security requirements, and regulatory compliance constraints. These systems can be difficult to modify without risking downtime or errors, which requires careful planning, thorough testing, and close collaboration with IT and security teams. Additionally, engineers must ensure that new technologies do not compromise data integrity or disrupt critical banking operations, making strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail essential in this role.

To thrive as a Banking Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, C#, or Python), a degree in computer science or a related field, and knowledge of financial systems and regulations. Familiarity with core banking platforms, databases (like Oracle or SQL Server), and experience with secure software development practices are typically required, along with relevant certifications such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with stakeholders and addressing complex banking requirements. These skills ensure the delivery of secure, reliable, and compliant banking solutions that support critical financial operations.

Brex

New York, NY • Hybrid

Full-time

Job description

Engineering at Brex

Engineering at Brex is about building systems that scale with speed and intention. Our teams span Software, Data, Security, and IT, and operate with high autonomy and deep collaboration. We tackle hard technical problems, own our outcomes, and push for excellence at every level - from architecture to deployment. It's an environment where engineering is a craft, and builders become leaders.

What you'll do

As a Staff Software Engineer in Banking, you will help shape the technical direction of one of Brex's most strategic and complex product areas. The Banking org is both a product and platform org, it owns the Brex Business Account product and AP offerings like Bill Pay and Vendors, and the underlying money movement platform and partner integrations that power those experiences. In this role, you'll work across customer-facing product surfaces and core financial infrastructure, driving architecture, reliability, and execution across that full stack.

This role is designed for an engineer who can move between long-horizon technical strategy and hands-on execution. You will partner closely with engineering, product, design, data, operations, risk, compliance, and external partners to simplify complex systems, improve reliability, and help the organization deliver ambitious product outcomes without losing sight of operational excellence.

You should be excited to lead through influence, bring clarity to ambiguous spaces, and raise the bar for how we design and operate banking systems at scale. This is a broad staff role spanning architecture, reliability, and product delivery, with meaningful opportunities to shape both the systems we build and how the Banking org works together.

Where you'll work

This role will be based in our New York office. We are a hybrid environment that combines the energy and connections of being in the office with the benefits and flexibility of working from home. We currently require a three days per week in the office - Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a perk, we also have up to four weeks per year of fully remote work!

Responsibilities:

  • Lead technical strategy for critical Banking initiatives, balancing long-term architecture with near-term delivery needs across multiple teams.
  • Drive the design and evolution of reliable, scalable systems for money movement, bank account experiences, payment orchestration, and related financial infrastructure.
  • Partner cross-functionally with product, design, operations, compliance, risk, and accounting to turn complex business and regulatory requirements into durable technical solutions.
  • Identify and resolve systemic reliability, quality, and operability issues, improving observability, incident prevention, and engineering standards over time. Provide technical leadership across teams by driving architecture reviews, aligning stakeholders, and helping teams make strong tradeoffs in ambiguous spaces.Mentor senior engineers and emerging technical leaders, helping raise the bar on system design, execution, and technical ownership within the Banking org.
  • Provide technical leadership across teams by driving architecture reviews, aligning stakeholders, and helping teams make strong tradeoffs in ambiguous spaces.
  • Mentor senior engineers and emerging technical leaders, helping raise the bar on system design, execution, and technical ownership within the Banking org.
  • Contribute directly when needed - whether through design, debugging, rollout strategy, or implementation - especially for high-stakes initiatives and critical path decisions.

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including experience operating as a senior technical leader on complex, multi-team initiatives
  • Demonstrated track record of leading architecture and delivery for large-scale distributed systems in a product or platform engineering environment
  • Strong systems thinking and the ability to simplify complex technical and organizational problems into clear, actionable plans
  • Experience improving reliability, operational excellence, and engineering quality in production systems with meaningful customer or business impact
  • Ability to work effectively across engineering, product, design, operations, compliance, risk, and other cross-functional partners
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and align teams without direct authority
  • Hands-on technical depth and sound engineering judgment, including the ability to dive into implementation details when needed
  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and helping scale technical leadership across an organization

Bonus Points:

  • Experience in fintech, banking, payments, ledgering, or money movement systems
  • Experience building systems in highly regulated environments
  • Experience leading large migrations, platform consolidations, or service modernization efforts
  • Experience working with external financial or infrastructure partners and integrating third-party systems into critical product flows
  • Experience defining technical strategy for org-level investments that span product, platform, and operational workflows

Compensation:

The expected salary range for this role is $240,000 - $285,000. However, the starting base pay will depend on a number of factors including the candidate's location, skills, experience, market demands, and internal pay parity. Depending on the position offered, equity and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package.
