Job description

Bank Michigan is seeking career-minded candidates for a Full Time Staff Accountant. In addition to a professional, customer-focused demeanor, candidates should have previous professional-level accounting experience preferably in banking/financial services, an appetite to learn/grow and be proficient with technology.

JOB SUMMARY

The Staff Accountant supports the bank's accounting operations by maintaining accurate financial records, preparing journal entries, performing reconciliations, and assisting with financial reporting and close processes. This role helps ensure the integrity of the general ledger, supports loan and deposit accounting activities, and assists with month-end and year-end close processes while maintaining compliance with accounting standards, banking regulations, and regulatory reporting.

Job Responsibilities:

Primary:

  • Prepare and post daily, weekly, and monthly journal entries.
  • Facilitate daily loan settlements with outside parties related to loan purchases, settlements, and sales.
  • Process and maintain monthly prepaid expense schedules.
  • Prepare and process monthly fixed asset entries while ensuring proper setup in accordance with bank policy.
  • Post daily and monthly investment entries for securities portfolio.
  • Maintain and analyze financial records related to loans, deposits, and other banking activities.
  • Prepare timely daily and monthly account reconciliations with supporting documentation.
  • Assist in the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements and internal management reports.
  • Support regulatory and financial reporting requirements.
  • Assist with internal and external audits by preparing documentation and responding to requests.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and banking regulations.
  • Assist with deposit placement programs setup and settlement.
  • Facilitate rate changes within the core system and proper approval documentation.
  • Communicate with shareholders regarding stock transactions and inquiries.
  • Serve as backup support for Accounts Payable and other accounting functions as needed.
  • Meet daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting deadlines.
  • Collaborate and investigate discrepancies, resolve issues, and provide resolutions with other departments when necessary.
  • Regularly troubleshoot discrepancies and apply creative problem-solving to resolve complex accounting issues.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and operational efficiencies.
  • Works harmoniously and collaboratively with team members to accomplish bank objectives.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, or related field.

Certifications: None

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Training and Experience: 

  1. 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably in banking or financial services.
  2. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  3. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  4. Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  5. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Knowledge of banking products such as loans, deposits, and treasury services preferred.
  7. Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to converse verbally and in writing with others.
  • Ability to utilize general office equipment, Internet and various business software programs (i.e. MS office).
  • Ability to travel within the community to attend various events and meetings.
