Union Tank Car Company is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Muscatine, Iowa. UTLX is a trusted industry leader, recognized for its regulatory, engineering, and commercial expertise, and is the preferred railcar and services provider for many customers nationwide.
Owned by the Marmon Group and Berkshire Hathaway, UTLX is headquartered in Chicago's financial district, near major public transportation hubs. The Baker is an entry-level role responsible for operating and monitoring the tank car baking process after coating application, ensuring proper temperature control and accurate documentation. This position also supports equipment maintenance, supply management, and a safe, organized work environment while following all safety and quality standards in an outdoor industrial setting. Duties may vary, and employees may be asked to perform additional job functions as needed.

Primary Job Functions:

Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Once tank car interior is coated, will apply piping to start baking procedure.
  • Turns on blower for a specified period before introducing temperature input.
  • Monitors the bake temperature per specifications until the intermediate bake or final bake has been completed.
  • Maintains and stores a record of the baking operations.
  • Maintains equipment and replenishes the short supply.
  • Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner and reports potential hazards.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test
  • Demonstrated jobrelated computational skills and ability to read gauges, rulers, and applicable measuring devices
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read, interpret, and adhere to safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and other work-related documentation
  • Strong focus on safety and quality.
  • Ability to work any shift, including overtime, in accordance with the union contract
  • Dependable and reliable attendance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an Industrial Repair or Manufacturing environment.
  • Rail industry experience
  • Tank car knowledge or experience

Work Environment & Schedule:

  • Work is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment involves regular exposure to challenging physically demanding and environmental conditions.
  • Duties may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise is common
  • Job requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, working at heights, and working in confined spaces
  • May work in confined spaces and at heights exceeding 10 ft. off the ground with proper PPE and fall protection.
  • Possibility of exposure to x-ray radiation hazards.
  • Manual dexterity and physical coordination required for tool and equipment operation
  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills
  • Must comply with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols
  • On-site work arrangement: 5 days a week, with overtime as required.
