What does a backend software developer do?

A Backend Software Developer is responsible for building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and application programming interfaces (APIs) that power web and mobile applications. They ensure that data is properly stored, secured, and retrieved, and that the backend communicates effectively with the frontend or user-facing side. Backend developers often work with programming languages like Java, Python, Ruby, or Node.js, and use frameworks and tools to optimize application performance and scalability. Their work is crucial for ensuring that applications run smoothly, handle user requests efficiently, and remain secure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend software developer?

To thrive as a Backend Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (such as Java, Python, or Node.js), a solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, and database management, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with frameworks (like Spring or Django), RESTful APIs, version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms is typically expected, along with relevant certifications being beneficial. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are the soft skills that set outstanding backend developers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for building scalable, reliable, and secure server-side applications that meet business and user needs.

What are some common challenges faced by backend software developers when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

Backend Software Developers often encounter challenges when integrating new technologies, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, maintaining data integrity during migrations, and minimizing downtime for end users. They must also carefully manage dependencies and address potential security vulnerabilities introduced by new components. Collaboration with DevOps, frontend teams, and QA is crucial to ensure smooth deployment and comprehensive testing throughout the integration process.

What is the difference between Backend Software Developer vs Frontend Software Developer?

Job description

About the Role
Regal is seeking a Backend Engineer to help build and maintain the systems that power our consumer-facing digital products, ticketing, ordering, loyalty, payments, and mobile experiences used by millions of moviegoers across the country.
This is a backend-focused role. You will spend the majority of your time designing and building APIs, services, and data systems in .NET and C#. You won't be expected to own the front end, but you will collaborate closely with front-end engineers and should be comfortable contributing to a React or Next.js codebase when the work calls for it.
You'll join a team that is actively modernizing its engineering culture, moving toward full-stack collaboration, shared ownership, and a more deliberate engineering practice. This isn't a siloed specialist role. You'll be expected to communicate openly, work across disciplines, and care about what you ship. This opportunity is open to Remote US candidates.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build, test, and maintain backend services and APIs using C# and .NET
  • Own backend features end to end, from technical design through deployment and production support
  • Collaborate with front-end engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver complete, well-integrated features
  • Write clean, testable, and well-documented code with a focus on reliability and maintainability
  • Participate in code reviews, both giving and receiving feedback thoughtfully
  • Contribute to architectural discussions and help define technical direction on your team
  • Identify and address performance bottlenecks, scalability concerns, and technical debt
  • Support and improve observability, logging, monitoring, and alerting across services you own

Qualifications
Required
  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with meaningful backend ownership
  • Strong proficiency in C# and .NET, this is your primary stack
  • Experience designing and building RESTful APIs consumed by web and mobile clients
  • Solid understanding of relational databases, SQL Server experience strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms, CI/CD practices, and modern software deployment
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of features from design through delivery
  • Strong communication skills, you can explain technical decisions clearly to engineers and non-engineers alike

Preferred
  • Experience with CosmosDB or other NoSQL document databases
  • Familiarity with React or Next.js, enough to collaborate effectively with front-end engineers and contribute when needed
  • Experience with Azure or similar cloud environments
  • Experience with React Native or cross-platform mobile development
  • Exposure to event-driven architecture, message queuing, or async processing patterns
  • Experience with observability tooling, Datadog, Serilog, Application Insights, or similar
  • Experience building consumer-facing products at meaningful scale
  • Familiarity with Redis or distributed caching strategies

What Success Looks Like
  • You ship reliable, well-tested backend features that make the product better for millions of guests
  • Your APIs are clean, documented, and easy for front-end engineers and partners to consume
  • You're a trusted voice in technical discussions, your opinions are informed, your code is sound, and your teammates want you in the room
  • You give and receive code review feedback that makes the team better
  • You raise issues early, communicate clearly, and don't let blockers sit
