What is a backend full stack engineer?

A Backend Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of an application, while also having proficiency in front-end technologies. They are capable of working on both the backend and frontend parts of web applications, allowing them to develop end-to-end features and ensure seamless integration between the client and server sides. This role requires strong knowledge of programming languages such as JavaScript (Node.js), Python, or Java, as well as familiarity with databases, server architectures, and various web frameworks. Backend Full Stack Engineers often collaborate with designers, frontend developers, and other stakeholders to deliver complete and functional products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backend full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Node.js, Python, or Java), database management, and a solid understanding of front-end technologies, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like Express, Django, or Spring), version control systems (like Git), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required. Effective problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across disciplines and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure scalable, maintainable applications and seamless integration between backend and frontend systems, which are critical for organizational success.

How does a backend full stack engineer typically collaborate with frontend developers and other team members?

Backend Full Stack Engineers frequently work alongside frontend developers, product managers, and QA engineers to deliver seamless user experiences. They are responsible for building and maintaining server-side logic and APIs, ensuring data flows efficiently between the backend and frontend. Effective communication is essential, as they must align backend functionality with frontend requirements and participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and troubleshooting sessions. This collaborative environment fosters learning and often provides opportunities to contribute across the tech stack, enhancing both technical and interpersonal skills.

Job description

Full Stack Engineer (70% FE, ReactJS, Python)
Location : Salem, NH(hybrid)
Duration :12 months

This position will support a business unit in Enterprise Technology. Position is unique that we are looking for Python w/ React, backend is in Python. Due to the importance of this business unit, this candidate must have outstanding teamwork and communication skills. Need polish and presentation.
The Role
This Principal Full Stack Engineer role is focused on building and supporting modern web applications using React on the front end and primarily Python on the back end, with an approximate 70/30 front-end-to-back-end split. The position requires 8+ years of full stack software engineering experience and a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Strong React/React.js and Python skills are key, along with JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML/CSS, relational databases, and experience within the Microsoft ecosystem, including Power Platform tools such as Power Apps, Power BI, and Power Automate. Experience with .NET may be considered, although Python is strongly preferred. The role also involves working with Azure and related enterprise technologies while designing scalable solutions to complex business problems.
A major part of the position involves owning CI/CD processes, deployment automation, version control, and release-management practices for React/Python applications. The engineer will work with cross-functional teams, provide technical leadership, and mentor junior developers, so strong communication and leadership skills are important. Experience with Agile development, automation scripting, and modern application architecture is expected. Additional desirable experience includes Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions, SQL Server, Microsoft Fabric, Dataverse, AI-assisted development tools such as Copilot or Claude, generative AI integration, and broader DevOps and cloud deployment practices.
Must Have:
  • 70/30 front end to back end
  • ReactJS (not Angular)
  • Python (or .NET) but Python is the strong preference
  • Microsoft ecosystem (PowerPlatorm): Powerapps, PowerBI, PowerAutomate
  • Generative AI development assistance (copilot or claude)
  • Relational database skills
Nice to Have:
  • SQL server, fabric, datavers
