Backend Full Stack Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backend Full Stack Engineer, you need strong proficiency in server-side languages (such as Node.js, Python, or Java), database management, and a solid understanding of front-end technologies, usually supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with frameworks (like Express, Django, or Spring), version control systems (like Git), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required. Effective problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across disciplines and deliver robust solutions. These skills ensure scalable, maintainable applications and seamless integration between backend and frontend systems, which are critical for organizational success.

How does a Backend Full Stack Engineer typically collaborate with frontend developers and other team members?

Backend Full Stack Engineers frequently work alongside frontend developers, product managers, and QA engineers to deliver seamless user experiences. They are responsible for building and maintaining server-side logic and APIs, ensuring data flows efficiently between the backend and frontend. Effective communication is essential, as they must align backend functionality with frontend requirements and participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and troubleshooting sessions. This collaborative environment fosters learning and often provides opportunities to contribute across the tech stack, enhancing both technical and interpersonal skills.

What is a Backend Full Stack Engineer?

A Backend Full Stack Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of an application, while also having proficiency in front-end technologies. They are capable of working on both the backend and frontend parts of web applications, allowing them to develop end-to-end features and ensure seamless integration between the client and server sides. This role requires strong knowledge of programming languages such as JavaScript (Node.js), Python, or Java, as well as familiarity with databases, server architectures, and various web frameworks. Backend Full Stack Engineers often collaborate with designers, frontend developers, and other stakeholders to deliver complete and functional products.

What is the difference between Backend Full Stack Engineer vs Frontend Developer?

AspectBackend Full Stack EngineerFrontend Developer
Primary FocusDeveloping server-side logic, databases, and APIsDesigning and implementing user interface and client-side features
Required SkillsProgramming languages like Python, Java, Node.js; databases; server managementHTML, CSS, JavaScript; frameworks like React or Angular
Work EnvironmentOften involved in both front-end and back-end tasks, collaborating across teamsPrimarily focused on client-side development, UI/UX design

While both roles require strong programming skills, Backend Full Stack Engineers handle both server-side and client-side development, whereas Frontend Developers focus mainly on creating engaging user interfaces. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities for each role.

They are seeking a Staff Full Stack Software Engineer to lead the technical direction of their spacecraft modeling and control platform, bridging military objectives with software solutions across the entire stack.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Lead and deliver large-scale, cross-functional initiatives that span the entire stack, aligning frontend experience, backend infrastructure, and system architecture with strategic company objectives, from technical vision through production deployment and long-term evolution
โ€ข Define and drive the full-stack technical roadmap and architectural strategy, establishing patterns, frameworks, and systems that enable the entire engineering organization to move faster across both React/TypeScript and Elixir codebases
โ€ข Serve as the primary technical decision-maker for cross-stack architecture, evaluating and adopting new technologies, defining the boundaries and contracts between frontend and backend systems, and establishing engineering standards that balance innovation with maintainability
โ€ข Proactively identify systemic technical debt, scalability challenges, and architectural limitations across the stack, then build business cases, secure buy-in, and lead multi-quarter initiatives to address them
โ€ข Elevate the engineering organization through technical mentorship, establishing best practices, leading design reviews, and developing the skills of senior, mid-level, and junior engineers across both frontend and backend disciplines
โ€ข Partner with executive leadership, product, design, space operations, and astrodynamics teams as a key technical stakeholder, influencing product strategy and company direction with a perspective that encompasses the entire technical surface
โ€ข Drive engineering efficiency and excellence by establishing metrics, tooling, and processes that improve code quality, system reliability, deployment velocity, and developer experience across the stack
โ€ข Build and maintain technical documentation, architectural decision records, and knowledge-sharing systems that scale organizational learning
โ€ข Represent the full-stack engineering perspective in strategic planning, resource allocation, and cross-company technical decisions Identify and develop emerging technical leaders within the team, creating growth pathways and opportunities for engineers to expand their impact across the stack
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข 12+ years of software development experience, with demonstrated expertise across both frontend and backend development
โ€ข Expert-level mastery of HTML/CSS and modern TypeScript/JavaScript, including deep understanding of performance optimization, browser internals, memory management, and runtime characteristics
โ€ข Deep expertise in modern React and the broader frontend ecosystem, including architectural patterns for large-scale applications, advanced state management, performance profiling and optimization, and emerging frontend technologies
โ€ข Expert-level mastery of Elixir and OTP, including deep understanding of BEAM internals, scheduling, memory management, garbage collection, process architecture, and runtime characteristics at scale
โ€ข Deep expertise in designing, building, and evolving large-scale distributed systems, including architectural patterns for fault tolerance, consistency, availability, clustering, and horizontal scalability
โ€ข Proven track record of establishing comprehensive testing strategies across the full stack, including unit, integration, property-based, and end-to-end, including championing testing culture and tooling adoption
โ€ข Extensive experience designing, building, and evolving component libraries, design systems, service architectures, and internal infrastructure that serve multiple teams and products
โ€ข Expert-level understanding of distributed systems integration patterns including gRPC, REST, WebSockets, and GraphQL, with experience defining API contracts and influencing architecture decisions across the stack
โ€ข History of leading technical initiatives in Git-based workflows, establishing code review standards, and fostering collaborative engineering culture
โ€ข U.S. Citizen and eligible for DoD Secret or TS/SCI clearance
Preferred:
โ€ข Bachelorโ€™s degree in computer science or similar discipline
โ€ข Proven experience as a technical lead, staff engineer, or principal engineer on production systems with significant user bases and business-critical requirements, with responsibility spanning multiple layers of the stack
โ€ข Track record of leading large-scale migrations, architectural overhauls, or platform rewrites across frontend and backend systems while maintaining product velocity and system reliability
