Job Summary:

LSUE seeks a part-time Mathematics Tutor.

This is an Other Academic, staff position that assists students in freshman and sophomore level mathematics courses in the Mathematics Tutoring Center.

This includes one-on-one help with topics and assistance with online homework.

An incumbent is needed with availability at some point between the hours of 8:00AM - 4:30PM, Monday through Friday, and may work up to 30 hours per week based on incumbent availability and departmental need.

Job Responsibilities:

80% Work with various constituencies who use the laboratory and computerized classrooms by doing the following:

  • Tutor students who are enrolled in Pre-Algebra, Introductory Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, or Applied College Algebra
  • Help students sign in and out of the laboratory
  • Help students with online platforms such as myLSUE, myCourses, MyMathLab, or other course software
  • Give passwords and actively maintain academic integrity while students are taking assessments in the laboratory
  • Provide a welcoming learning environment in the laboratory

20%Oversee day to day laboratory operations
Manage technical issues and inoperable equipment
Help schedule operating hours
Train student assistants and oversee their time
Maintain and track laboratory and classroom usage data
Communicate with the Dean of the Division of Sciences and Mathematics to identify potential problems and work load needs
Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of the Division of Sciences and Mathematics

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors in Mathematics or other applicable degree from a regionally accredited academic institution, with credit in College Algebra and Trigonometry

Experience working with students at either a high school or higher education institution
Current bachelor's degree students who have passed Algebra and Trigonometry may apply

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or Mathematics Education (courses through Differential Calculus)

3 years of experience teaching high school or higher education mathematics instruction. Experience at explaining mathematics to a diverse population

Special and/or Physical Qualifications:

Ability to stand and/or walk for an extended period of time

Ability to bend from a standing position or sit next to students at desk

Ability to read a computer screen and comprehend mathematical symbols and comprehend their meaning

Ability to listen to students' questions and comprehend what is being asked

Competencies:

Advanced Basic Math Skills

Proficient Computer Operation Skills

Proficient Teaching Instruction Skills

Beginner training and directing of student workers
