Assistant Department Head - Purdue University Indianapolis
Department of Computer Science | Indianapolis, Indiana
The Purdue University Department of Computer Science seeks a collaborative and student-centered leader to serve as Assistant Department Head for Computer Science in Indianapolis. This position provides strategic and operational leadership for the department's Indianapolis presence, advancing academic programs, student engagement, faculty and staff support, space and facilities planning, recruiting, communications, and cross-campus collaboration.
Working closely with CS department leadership in West Lafayette, College of Science partners, Purdue Indianapolis leadership, advisors, faculty, staff, and students, the Assistant Department Head will help shape a strong, connected, and distinctive Computer Science experience in Indianapolis while ensuring alignment with departmental and university goals, policies, and standards.
What You'll Do
  • Lead and manage professional and management staff, fostering a positive, collaborative, and accountable work environment.
  • Support strategic planning efforts and help translate departmental goals into effective operational practices.
  • Direct and oversee administrative operations to ensure efficient day-to-day functioning of the unit.
  • Develop, communicate, implement, and continuously improve departmental processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies, standards, and operational expectations.
  • Partner with leadership on budget planning, resource allocation, and priority-setting activities.
  • Build strong relationships with faculty, staff, students, and university partners to support departmental success.
  • Contribute to initiatives that advance academic programs, operational excellence, and organizational effectiveness.

Education and Experience Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the position
  • Minimum of Six (6) years of operations or program management and managerial work experience required

Preferred:
  • Higher ed experience
  • Advanced degree

  • Ability to:
    • interpret and implement University policies and procedures
    • influence and build work relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels
  • Excellent communication (oral & written), strategic planning, performance metrics, problem-solving, analytical, organizational, event planning, project management and customer service skills
  • Computer and related software skills (i.e., word processing, creating and maintaining databases/spreadsheets, PowerPoint, web savvy, etc.)
  • Must be able to:
    • foster a participative supervisory style that utilizes teamwork to successfully guide the work of others
    • multi-task and meet established deadlines
