Position Summary:
American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is seeking a passionate and experienced full-time Bird Tour Coordinator to organize and oversee domestic and international birding field trips for ABC's major supporters. ABC is a fast-growing, results-focused wildlife conservation non-profit seeking an employee with an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to make a difference for birds throughout the Americas. ABC takes bold action to conserve wild birds and their habitats. Inspired by the wonder of birds, we achieve lasting results for the bird species most in need while also benefiting human communities, biodiversity, and the planet's fragile climate. Our every action is underpinned by science, strengthened by partnerships, and rooted in the belief that diverse perspectives yield stronger results.
This position is crucial for strengthening ABC's relationships with donors by planning and executing exceptional birding experiences that highlight ABC's conservation efforts. The Bird Tour Coordinator will plan and organize birding trips, some of which ABC has operated for years, and others which would be new to the organization.
Primary Duties:
  • Plan and coordinate domestic and international birding field trips for ABC's major supporters, approximately three 3-4 day domestic trips/year and two week-long international trips/year, noting that some trips may be outside of the Americas.
  • Arrange for ABC staff and/or experienced birding tour guides to lead trips, and lead select birding trips.
  • Manage logistics related to travel, accommodations, permits, and schedules for ABC-led birding excursions.
  • Promote ABC's mission by communicating with tour participants and industry professionals about ABC's conservation work.
  • Ensure high-quality birding experiences that align with ABC's values and conservation priorities.
  • Coordinate closely with Development, Communications & Marketing, and Program staff as well as ABC partners to ensure the success of trips and events.
  • Help develop ABC field trip policies and practices, such as trip descriptions, travel/medical insurance info/waiver, participant responsibilities, etc.
  • Advise on ABC trips organized by other staff members.
  • Provide input into birding trip pricing structure and strategy.

Requirements
  1. Proven experience as a birding tour leader, with strong bird identification skills and conservation knowledge.
  2. 5-7 years of experience organizing and leading birding trips, including international trips, and coordinating all logistics from lodging to meals to transportation. Familiarity with birding locations at http://www.conservationbirding.org is considered a plus, as is familiarity with global birding hotspots and tour destinations.
  3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including strong customer service skills and the ability to engage and educate ABC's major supporters about conservation efforts.
  4. High standards for exceptional birding tours.
  5. Flexibility and understanding the need to pivot; comfort with ambiguity at times, particularly when piloting new trips.
  6. Familiarity with ABC's mission and conservation work is a plus.
  7. Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and coordinate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  8. Occasional air and car travel may be required with this position; Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
  9. Possess and maintain a valid current passport.
  10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or other relevant organizational tools.
  11. Spanish and/or Portuguese fluency a plus.
  12. All remote and hybrid employees are required to have a stable and high-speed internet service provider in place prior to beginning work for ABC. Our distributed work force relies heavily on cloud technologies, Zoom, and other automations to successfully complete our day to day work. The ideal speeds are 30-40 Mbps for downloads and 10-15 Mbps for uploads.
  13. You may be required to use your personal cell phone to access ABC systems remotely.
