What is an AXP job?

An AXP job typically refers to a role within the Architect Experience Program (AXP), which is a training requirement for becoming a licensed architect. The AXP, overseen by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), helps aspiring architects gain essential experience in key practice areas. Jobs under AXP include internships or entry-level positions in architecture firms, where participants work under licensed architects to develop their skills. Completion of AXP is required before taking the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Axp position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architectural Experience Program (AXP) Participant, you need a degree in architecture or a related field, a strong understanding of design principles, and the ability to use industry-standard drafting and modeling software. Familiarity with tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) AXP system is essential, along with progress tracking toward licensure. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and effective time management are key soft skills for collaborating on projects and learning from mentors. These competencies are crucial because AXP is structured to prepare emerging professionals for architectural licensure by ensuring exposure to core practice areas and fostering a professional work ethic.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for an AXP Participant in an architecture firm?

As an AXP Participant, your daily duties often include assisting senior architects with design development, preparing construction documents, participating in client or team meetings, and conducting site visits. You'll be exposed to varied project phases, such as schematic design, construction administration, and project management tasks, all while documenting your experience for NCARB reporting. Collaboration is central, as you'll work closely with project architects, engineers, and other design professionals. This hands-on involvement helps you gain the broad experience required for licensure and a successful career in architecture.
