What is an Axel?

An axel is a type of jump in figure skating that is considered one of the most difficult and important elements. It is unique because it takes off from a forward outside edge and requires an extra half rotation compared to other jumps. Skaters land the axel on the opposite foot they took off from, and the jump can be performed as a single, double, triple, or even quadruple axel, depending on the number of rotations completed in the air.
