What opportunities for leadership development are available to AVP Software Engineers within most organizations?

As an AVP Software Engineer, you are often positioned to take on both technical and managerial responsibilities, which opens doors for significant leadership development. Many organizations offer mentorship programs, cross-functional project leadership roles, and access to executive training to help you build skills in team management, strategic planning, and stakeholder communication. You may also be encouraged to guide junior engineers, influence architectural decisions, and participate in high-level meetings, all of which can accelerate your growth into senior leadership positions. Actively seeking feedback and engaging in continuous learning are key to making the most of these opportunities.

What is the difference between Avp Software Engineer vs Software Development Manager?

The Avp Software Engineer primarily focuses on technical development, coding, and system design within a team. In contrast, a Software Development Manager oversees project management, team leadership, and strategic planning. Both roles require strong technical backgrounds, but their responsibilities differ significantly, with the Avp Software Engineer being more hands-on technically, and the manager focusing on team and project management.

What is L1, L2, L3, and L4 developer?

In software engineering, L1, L2, L3, and L4 typically refer to different levels of developer seniority or expertise, with L1 being entry-level and L4 being senior or lead roles. These levels often indicate experience, responsibilities, and skill requirements, and are used by organizations to structure career progression and compensation. For an AVP Software Engineer, understanding these levels helps in assessing job expectations and growth opportunities within the company.

What is an AVP Software Engineer?

An AVP Software Engineer is an Associate Vice President in the software engineering field, typically found at large organizations such as banks or corporations. This role involves leading software development teams, overseeing technical projects, and ensuring that software solutions align with business goals. AVP Software Engineers bridge the gap between technical staff and upper management, often participating in strategic planning, architecture design, and mentoring junior engineers. They must possess strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and business acumen. The position is considered a mid-to-senior level management role within the technology hierarchy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AVP Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AVP Software Engineer, you need advanced proficiency in software development, system architecture, and project management, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field and several years of technical experience. Familiarity with modern programming languages, cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and agile methodologies, as well as certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or PMP, are highly valued. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and excellent communication skills help you lead teams and collaborate effectively with stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for driving technical innovation, delivering complex projects on time, and aligning technology solutions with business objectives.

Job description

Our Mission

Our mission is to SAVE AND IMPROVE LIVES BY EMPOWERING HEALTHCARE CONSUMERS. Come be part of remarkable.

Overview

How you can make a difference

The AVP Quality Engineering & Release Management role is a key engineering leader reporting to the Head of Engineering, responsible for defining and executing the enterprise Quality strategy for HealthEquity across three distinct ecosystems: our flagship platform, the platform for our Reimbursement Accounts Product, and our specialized Mobile suite. This role will lead a federated organization of Core Quality COE/Infrastructure team, Release Management team and a team of Software Development Engineers in Test, who are embedded within Scrum teams but report centrally to you.  This leader's mission is to harmonize quality standards, modernize our release machinery, and pioneer the integration of Agentic AI to move us toward a self-healing, autonomous testing and release lifecycle. This role reports to the Head of Engineering.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead a Core Quality COE/Infrastructure team, and Release Management team.
  • Manage a high-performing, matrixed team of Software Development Engineers in Test. Ensure a consistent "Quality First" culture while allowing for the speed and autonomy of embedded Scrum teams.
  • Establish a single source of truth for quality metrics (e.g., DORA metrics, escaped defect rates, code coverage) across all of our platforms.
  • Lead the implementation of Agentic AI to move beyond static scripts. Drive the adoption of AI agents that can autonomously discover bugs, generate test cases, and self-heal broken tests.
  • Utilize machine learning to predict release risks and automate "Go/No-Go" decisions based on historical performance and real-time telemetry.
  • Design and maintain the release "trains" for multiple backend Platforms and Mobile, ensuring backend dependencies are synchronized with Mobile app store deployments.
  • Own the strategy and uptime for all lower environments (Dev, QA, UAT). Drive the transition toward ephemeral, containerized environments that reduce "environment drift" bottlenecks.
  • Act as the primary bridge between Product, Engineering, Security and DevOps. You must be able to influence leaders across different legacy stacks and any newly created teams.
  • Own enterprise-wide quality reporting and deliver executive-level insights.
  • Partner with Architecture to evolve tooling, test frameworks, and CI/CD integrations.
  • Establish rigorous release governance, scheduling, coordination, documentation, and communications.
  • Define and enforce release criteria, quality gates, and rollback processes.
  • Drive improvements across release predictability, throughput, quality, and speed.
  • Build and foster a culture of accountability, excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor QA leaders and build strong career paths and technical ladders.
  • Manage a global talent strategy balancing FTE, nearshore, and offshore resources.
  • Partner closely with Engineering Teams, Compliance, Security, Audit, Architecture and PMO to meet SOX/SOC2 and regulatory expectations.
  • Participate in strategic planning for platform modernization and architectural evolution.

What you will need to be successful

  • 12+ years in Software Engineering/Quality leadership, with at least 5 years at the Director or AVP level.
  • Proven track record of managing quality for large-scale distributed systems and complex mobile ecosystems (iOS/Android).
  • Experience navigating the technical and cultural integration of acquired platforms.
  • Deep understanding of LLMs and AI Agents (e.g., AutoGPT, LangChain frameworks) applied to the SDLC. We are looking for a leader who treats AI as a core engineer, not just a tool.
  • Proficiency in CI/CD orchestration (Jenkins, GitLab CI, or GitHub Actions), cloud-native infrastructure (AWS/Azure/GCP), and mobile testing frameworks.
  • Ability to "speak the language" of both legacy monoliths and modern microservices.
  • A bias for action. You don't just identify bottlenecks; you clear them.
  • Ability to translate complex quality data into actionable insights for C-suite stakeholders.
Salary Range$193,500.00 To $250,000.00 / yearBenefits & Perks

The actual compensation offer is determined based on job-related knowledge, education, skills, experience, and work location.
