Position Title:  AVID Tutor

SUMMARY:  Description: AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) tutors play a critical role in supporting students' academic success. Tutors work closely with small groups of students in an inquiry-based, collaborative environment, helping them develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and academic habits to excel in rigorous coursework.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate student-led tutorials, guiding small groups through inquiry-based discussions.
  • Support students in using AVID strategies, including Focused Note-Taking and organizational skills.
  • Collaborate with AVID teachers to align tutorials with classroom content and goals.
  • Provide positive academic and personal encouragement to students, promoting a growth mindset.
  • Model effective questioning strategies that foster independent learning and critical thinking.

EXPECTATIONS:

  • Attend initial and ongoing AVID tutor training sessions.
  • Commit to consistent attendance and punctuality for assigned tutorial sessions.
  • Maintain a respectful and supportive learning environment, fostering inclusion for all students, especially our multilingual learners.
  • Encourage student accountability for their own learning through structured questioning and reflection.
  • Communicate with AVID staff and teachers regarding student progress and areas of need.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework preferred.
  • Strong academic skills and a passion for working with middle school students.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn AVID methodologies.
  • Ability to engage and motivate students from diverse backgrounds.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Previous work in child care. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
