Job description

Position Purpose/Summary *Please note that this is a Civil Service position. This position is not currently open, should there become an opening we will hire off of the list of applicants starting with the oldest application date.* APPLICATION FOR CITY OF SPRINGFIELD LABOR SERVICE Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of filing application. Incomplete applications will not be processed

The name of an applicant will remain on the Labor Service register for the job title which he or she is registered for a period of not more than 5 years from the date of registration, subject to a renewal of registration as provided in Section 28, Chapter 31 of the General Laws, and subject to compliance with other applicable provisions of the Civil Service law and rules. This is maintenance work of above average difficulty and of a skilled nature. Work involves the performance of a variety of manual and skilled tasks in the installation, repair and general maintenance of oil burning and gas burning heating equipment.

This installation and maintenance work is above average difficulty and of a skilled nature. Work involves the performance of a variety of manual and skilled tasks in the installation, repair and maintenance of oil and gas heating equipment. Essential Functions Installs, repairs, and maintains oil burners and gas burners and related equipment.

Checks fuel draft and makes necessary adjustments to damper. Inspects and maintains controls, drafts inducers, smoke stacks, chimneys and piping. Performs preventive maintenance and necessary cleaning of all components and parts.

Troubleshoots oil burner, repairs and replaces parts, and returns oil burner to operating condition. Performs a variety of manual and skilled tasks common to oil burner and gas combination burner maintenance. Maintains the clean and orderly condition of all work areas and equipment.

Performs related work as required. Work involves writing specifications for installation of oil and gas burning heating equipment and the supervision of the installation of this equipment. Performs safety inspections on oil and gas heating equipment as required by Massachusetts' safety codes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of the use of tools, equipment and materials commonly employed in the work performed. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in the work performed. Working knowledge of the standard methods and procedures necessary to perform complete and timely maintenance on the equipment concerned.

Ability to perform manual labor frequently requiring considerable physical exertion. Ability to understand and follow both written and oral instructions. Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials employed.

Unrestricted license for repair oil and gas burning heating equipment in the State of Massachusetts Master Pipers license in the State of Massachusetts, through knowledge of installation and repair of electronic controls. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Experience in general oil burner repair and maintenance.
