Av System Design information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AV System Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AV System Designer, you need strong expertise in audio-visual engineering principles, system integration, and a relevant technical degree or certification (such as CTS). Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, AV control systems (e.g., Crestron, Extron), and signal flow analysis tools is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top professionals apart in this field. These skills ensure that complex AV solutions are designed accurately, function reliably, and meet client needs in diverse environments.

What are some common challenges faced by AV System Designers during project implementation, and how are they typically addressed?

AV System Designers often encounter challenges such as integrating new technology with legacy systems, ensuring compatibility between different hardware and software components, and meeting client expectations within budget constraints. These issues are typically addressed by conducting thorough needs assessments, collaborating closely with vendors and other technical teams, and staying up-to-date with industry standards. Regular communication with clients and stakeholders helps manage expectations and ensures that any potential issues are identified and resolved early in the project lifecycle.

What is AV system design?

AV system design refers to the process of planning, creating, and implementing audio-visual systems for various environments such as conference rooms, classrooms, or event spaces. This involves selecting appropriate equipment like speakers, microphones, displays, and control systems, and ensuring they work together seamlessly. AV system designers also consider factors like room acoustics, user needs, and integration with existing technology to deliver an effective and reliable AV experience. The goal is to create a system that is both functional and easy to use for all intended purposes.

What is the difference between Av System Design vs AV Installation Technician?

AspectAv System DesignAV Installation Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in AV technology, electronics, or related field; certifications like CTS are commonOften requires technical training or certification; hands-on experience is key
Work EnvironmentDesigns are created in offices or design studios; involves planning and technical documentationWorks on-site installing and configuring AV equipment
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by AV integrators, design firms, and technology companiesEmployed by AV installation companies, contractors, and service providers

Av System Design focuses on creating detailed plans and specifications for AV systems, while AV Installation Technicians execute these plans by installing and configuring equipment on-site. Both roles are essential in the AV industry but differ in their focus and responsibilities.

Job description

Position Summary:
IMG Academy’s Campus Technology Department is seeking an experienced and technically skilled Manager of AV & Physical Infrastructure to lead a dedicated team of AV and infrastructure technicians supporting one of the world’s premier sports and education campuses. This is a hands-on leadership role focused on the physical technology layer of campus operations encompassing audiovisual systems, structured cabling, security camera infrastructure, digital signage, and IP video distribution across a large, complex, multi-facility environment.

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in AV systems design and deployment, physical infrastructure build-outs, and security camera platforms, combined with strong team leadership and project management skills. This individual will ensure the reliability, documentation, and continuous improvement of all physical technology infrastructure in direct support of student-athletes, faculty, staff, and campus events.

This manager will directly oversee and develop the following team within the Campus Technology Department
Position Responsibilities:

Team & Operational Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of AV and infrastructure technicians, fostering a culture of accountability, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish and monitor SLAs and service metrics for AV support, infrastructure maintenance, and project delivery across campus.
  • Manage workload prioritization, staffing schedules, and on-call rotations to ensure timely response to AV and infrastructure needs.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, provide coaching and development plans, and identify training opportunities aligned to team and departmental goals.

AV Systems

  • Provide technical oversight for AV system design, installation, configuration, and ongoing support across classrooms, conference rooms, athletic venues, and event spaces.
  • Manage the full AV lifecycle: from needs assessment and design through procurement, installation, commissioning, and end-of-life refresh.
  • Ensure AV systems across campus are properly maintained, documented, and performing to standard, including display systems, audio systems, control systems, and video distribution infrastructure.
  • Serve as the technical escalation point for complex AV issues and support requests across all campus facilities.
  • Evaluate and recommend emerging AV technologies and platforms that align with campus operational needs and long-term strategy.

Physical Infrastructure & Cabling

  • Oversee the installation, maintenance, and documentation of campus-wide structured cabling infrastructure, including copper (Cat6/6A), fiber optic (single-mode and multi-mode), and coaxial cable plant.
  • Manage rack builds, patch panel organization, IDF/MDF infrastructure, and cable management standards across all campus facilities.
  • Assist in job walks for new construction, renovation, and infrastructure refresh projects; provide technical input on cabling and physical layer requirements.
  • Ensure all physical infrastructure work meets industry standards (TIA/EIA, BICSI) and internal documentation requirements.
  • Coordinate with Facilities and construction teams on infrastructure projects, ensuring proper pathways, conduit, and space planning for technology systems.

Security Camera & Access Infrastructure

  • Oversee security camera infrastructure projects campus-wide, including camera selection, placement planning, installation, and lifecycle management.
  • Manage Milestone VMS platform and related NVR/recording infrastructure, ensuring system uptime, storage health, and integration with campus access control.
  • Coordinate with campus security and operations stakeholders on camera coverage requirements, system expansions, and incident response support.
  • Maintain documentation of all camera assets, locations, configurations, and connectivity within the infrastructure record system.

Digital Signage & IP Video Distribution

  • Manage digital signage infrastructure across campus, including content management platforms, display hardware, and network-connected media players.
  • Oversee IP video distribution systems and associated hardware, ensuring reliable delivery of video content to displays across campus facilities and athletic venues.
  • Coordinate with campus stakeholders on content needs, scheduling, and display system requirements for events and day-to-day operations.

Project & Vendor Management

  • Lead AV and infrastructure projects from scope definition and budgeting through installation, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Develop cost estimates and scopes of work for new installations and infrastructure upgrades; present findings to departmental leadership.
  • Manage vendor relationships, procurement, and subcontracting activities, including evaluating in-house vs. outsourced delivery models for AV and infrastructure work.
  • Track and manage project budgets, purchase orders, and financial controls in adherence to campus fiscal policies.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that increase the efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness of AV and infrastructure deployments.

Documentation & Communication

  • Ensure proper documentation of all physical layer infrastructure including cable plant records, patch panel databases, rack diagrams, camera asset registers, and as-built drawings.
  • Provide regular updates to the Director of Campus Technology on project status, system health, and departmental metrics.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders across Athletics, Academics, Facilities, and Operations to align AV and infrastructure solutions with campus program needs.
  • Translate technical findings into clear communications for non-technical stakeholders and campus leadership.
